I seem to recall the French and Spanish had "much love" for the Monty.

Seems to be more left in France than in the UK! Maybe because they don't end up donating their diesel engines to Land Rovers.

not as much salt on our roads, in fact none on ours ever which can be a real pain, snow tyres are a bonus to have here :D

apart from the MG's they were great models but just felt VP's just were as upmarket as the should be... Pov models were terrible but probably more rare than high spec models..

umm i need a fix of the MG side now

When I started driving in '94, a Mk1 MG Metro was seen as quite a decent first car!Around that time my mate's dad had a VDP Montego estate on a D-plate, I recall that the leather was pretty plasticiky and that despite him hosing out the wheelarches and underside every week it still rotted to death. I prefer the earlier povo-spec models with those crazy wheeltrimz, a 1.6L Monty and a dangly-mirrors 1.6L Sierra would be GR8 to own (I've done the 1.6 Mk2 Cavalier thang already!).

not sure how many pov spec montego's are left cant be many, seen more sierras here than montegos

You're not sick and you certainly aren't wrong. IMO If you never own one, you remain one of those who criticise them because the Press did.Apart from the craply built smack-foil body, leaky sunroof, airfix easy-break plastic interior, my ol' Monty Estate was a good car. It was smooth, reliable, fairly comfy (minus the wet arse from the leaky sunroof  ) and had bags of space inside. Sadly, mine went to Austin heaven in 2003...

The only Monty I had is probally still littering the streets of Barcelona, complete with Prima and half a tank of juice! I'll look on google earth later see if its still there.....

Not really selling it to me so far....

My -slightly eccentric- neighibours had one, a diesel cunt tree man. Appallingly grotty but seemed to be pretty tough. They used it for tugging their horsebox with. I think it just got too damn holey in the end, so they spunked about £30G on a Discovery instead.....

Mate of mine had a bad case of the Montegos back in about '89. Two of 'em, one after the other, both beige 1.6 HLS spec jobs. The second one he had was possibly the worse secondhand car buy of the 20th Century, an ex-Belfast minicab which had blatantly been abused somewhat. The very last of the petrol Montegos were ok other than eating wheel bearings for some reason. Like the last of the SD1s were the best built ones, but by that time the damage had been done and no-one would go near 'em unless they were cheap enough to be disposable. There used to be a posh spec, late, Montego Estate near me that always had a perverse appeal. I've never seen another like it. Dark metallic green, 2.0 Petrol, cross spoke alloys, full leather, roof rails, and fitted with probably every option available. I'd probably have that one if it came up for sale..

Hmm, I seem to recall that the Montego's owned by both my father and grandfather suffered this trait. Fatha_Weasel's one was the first brand new car he'd ever had, with a giddy smell of new plastic interior. Still seemed a bit of a come-down after the lovely wafty interstellar Mk2 Granada it replaced though. :?

A good friend of mine has a very early VP Metro, 3 dr, which is a low mileage one owner job. However it has been sitting in a garage for about 2 years now, (and sat outside for a year before that). He'd probably take £100 for it now, after having a very inflated idea of its value a few years ago (£500 with no Mot!). I guess 100 notes is what the Mini boys will pay for its A+ engine. PM me if anyone wants his number. It's light green metallic with (I think) a brown velour interior. It's not one of the VP 500 ones. The bodywork is OK, needs a front valance and a new wing, but I haven't looked underneath.P.S. Is there a Metro lover's site out there? I know there is a good Maestro/Montego site, might stick it on there.

Car is in West Wales, SA40 9YN for multimapping, approx 30 miles from the end of the M4.It is a Metro VP Automatic, X reg. 45k on the clock, 38k on it when my friend brought it in 2000. Was religiously put through an MOT every year until about 2005.It has a seized rear brake on the offside.Has a bit of grot on the rear valance, and is starting to go on the n/s wing, at the top corner near the B pillar. It comes with a set of alloy wheels, and two new front wings. It is a metallic green I believe is known as Opaline green.'Offers above scrap/breaking value' - to me that sounds like £100. PM me for his phone number.

What, as in the owner had to do an awful lot of praying that it would pass? There's a bit of nostalgic appeal to me in these things, but they're not terribly high up my ownership list. Drove an F-reg Montego Turbo once (F666KJN IIRC), even at four or so years old it seemed a slightly tatty thing.

I used to go on Metropower when I had my GTI http://www.metropower.co.uk,although it tends to be more for modified cars.Still some good stuff on there though.

LOLOLOLOLOL!You'd need a wing and a prayer.I do get a bit tempted by the old Monstro Turdo's, if only to find out of the torque steer is as savage as reportred at the time. Metro's of any denomination can still bugger off though.
