Is it trying to kill me?

Insomnia is getting the better of me tonight so I thought I would contribute to the AS night shift. My Vauxhall Frontera has an annoying trait that is quite frankly scary. It drives like any other 4x4,so a pissed up crab on greasy marbles sums it up. However when the weather turns moist it tries to drift the minute the wheel turns. Now you might think woah there fella slow down, but sub 20 mph and it still tries to drift. It's frankly shocking and it freaks out any passengers that travel with me. It has LSD on the rear so that's not helping but are they really that twitchy? I pulled away yesterday very slowly to ease into traffic but the back broke traction with almost no revs at all. The tyres have loads of tread and are not linglongeventkoreankerbfinders, so what's up? I adapted my driving style when I got it,which reduced the incidents but short of driving everywhere at 10mph what can I do?

I'll investigate your tyre issue if you can stop my missus snoring so I can get some fucking sleep.

Deal?

I would say it is a tyre problem. I had a 110 Land Rover which had Sime tyres on it, loads of tread but were lethal in the wet one road and crap off road. I put a set of BFG trac edges on it which transformed the way it drove.

I'd agree if speeds were higher. If it's seriously twitchy at low speeds, that sounds to me much more like a mechanical issue. LSDs can definitely cause this sort of problem, especially if the oil is tired or someone has used the wrong oil.

Get her to wear a bra in bed back to front and pop a tennis ball in one cup ( or football if she is very well endowed). This will prevent her from sleeping on her back and hopefully stop her snoring as the glottis flops back into the larynx.

It does sound like the oil is pressuring up to quickly in the LSD. I would also have a look at the condition of the turny bits inside the diff. Have the teeth become rounded? Is the oil level correct? has the oil become pasty or greasy? HAs someone used engine oil in the diff?

Yep, as already said, if you're confident the tyres are ok, it's diff/axle related.

Does it try and drift both ways? If not, worth checking for a sticky caliper too, even if it just takes it's time to release, may be enough resistance to cause issues.

This will also make ballroom dancing more enjoyable for you...

My Hilux drifted around this corner in the ice, there was no warning, the back end just went and I said 'whooooaaa' and somehow got it straight again.

I'd be inclined to look into the tyre issue.

How old are the tyres??

It sounds to me to be that the rubber has hardened.

There's sone cracking finance deals on tyres if you look around!!

If not, check the diff.

As well as tyres and diff, I'd be having a good look at the axle locating bushes, just in case. /tester

Finance on tyres? That's a new one on me.

Sorry,I wrote this last night and it's been bothering me ever since. I was mortified if the fella would get offended. But considering he liked it,I will at least stand some chance of sleeping tonight.

I had a SWB Frontera with an LSD and it was pretty twitchy even after a diff drain and refil with the proper stuff.

The early ones are on leaf springs on the rear and later one coils. Mine was leafs which was.......kinda bouncy, and aparently these are worse for LSD shenanigans than the coil sprung ones.

I ran Toyo Open County tyres on it to good effect. In fact out of all the 4x4s I have owned, that was probably the most capable offroad thanks to the rear diff.

Just drove it today in the sunshine and on a dry roundabout the tyres were squealing like an episode of starsky and hutch. Will drop the oil when I find out what it needs. Funny that the young lad at helfrauds had not even heard of a frontera let alone what oil it needed. I'm getting bored of it,but it's vegetarian and I get some oil from work for gratis.
