If you're going to buy a Kawasaki get a 2 stroke, with 3 cylinders.

Try a Ktm 300 before you give up on strokers . Power everywhere ! Even when you don't want it .

I've been riding 300's for about 8 years and the sheer amount of grunt still amazes me

I had a go on a mates KTM 300 Enduro bike on some local roads. Bloody hell, I was not expecting that! Loads of manic power delivery everywhere. It has a Rekluse clutch on it which just broadened my grin- what a great bike. If I wasn't so bloody awful at riding off road, I'd have one in a heartbeat.

As for 2 strokes, a old 350 looks like it may be on its way to me!!

Mate used to have a Maico 490

When you could get the bastard to start the whole world reverberated to the manic metallic ting ting ting of the beast. ....and hats off to anyone who could ride them at anywhere near the full potential

Scared the shite outta me on many an occasion

Its funny how these old strokers were so feared . The modern 300's make loads more power but in a much smoother , more controlled fashion . I suppose the suspension and brakes have improved too.

2 stroke far too impractical for 3k in 4 days type things

2nd bike is supposed to be a larf not a headache

Strokers are awesome. I had a load including the usual RDs, but also early seventies TS250s and as for distance I did Coventry to the German GP and back in three days (one day watching it) on a KR1 with no trouble at all. Wouldn't do it now but that's my dodgy joints not the bike. I never had a breakdown on any of them, as long as they are maintained and fed good oil they are just as reliable as a four stroke.

Jawa?

Looks like I have purchased not only a 350 Jawa, but a 250 CZ too. Fun times ahead, but doubt very much they will be as fearsome as the Honda CR500 supermoto I had a go of a few years ago. The KTM 300 (possibly an EXC?) probably wasn't that much down on power but delivered it so much better, and the engine far smoother.

I likes 2 strokes.

I love 2 strokes. Personal rule was always: under 500cc = 2 stroke, above =4 stroke. That way guarantees fun.

I always wanted a Yamaha IT after a mate (back in the day) was expecting a ban and sold his Z650 and bought a brand new IT175. Dear lord it was quick and fun... and temperamental! So when I was really into dirt bikes and classics (had my Husky TE450, Yam XT500, wife had a CCM and an XT250 - his and hers :)  ) I wanted, no, NEEDED an IT 465 or 490 but preferred the smaller bike.

I tried for ages to buy one local but the owner was a cock and kept on messing around so I bought one from a dealer bloody miles away that needed loads of work and was about double the price (£1500). I spent months restoring it (but not the frame as that was perfect and had California legal stickers all over it and I wanted to keep them) and then got it MOT'd and registered and it was.... terrifying!

It was an absolute bastard to start and used to kick back viciously if you didn't kick with commitment and once it put the end of the kisckstart lever through the sole of my boot and another time it shattered the gears inside. They do that. A lot...

Once it was running, it was a riot: gutless (comparatively) and sounded awful all spluttery and boggy and then as the revs rose it all smoothed out and then .... all hell broke loose! It was the only bike that would spin the tyre and wheelie at the same time I have ever ridden and it was epically vicious - I loved it. But, in real terms a KTM 300 (250 as well :(   ) would just walk away from it as they are so much...better. Also, the brakes were appalling twin leading shoe drums and the vibration of that engine used to make your fillings fall out.

For what I wanted to use it for (laning and occasional MX track use) it was useless. It needed wide open spaces and a MUCH better rider than me :( I sold it and have regretted it ever since.
