To Turbot or not to Turbot that is the ZX question

I have a na 1.9D ZX   almost with an MOT.  I have a 1.9TD ZX with an appointment at the scrappy.   Is the conversion from na to Turbot a straight forward head/manifold/Turbot/intercooler swap  or does it involve swearing?

Believe they beefed up the pistons too, and they'll be a lower compression ratio. You'd be better off swapping the entire engine. Though the gearing is probably taller in the turbo, so you should probably change the gearbox as well. In other words, no, it's not really a straight forward swap.

1st and 2nd are about the same, 3rd, 4th, 5th are different and the diff ratio is different,  overall less then 10%.  in the higher gears.       Compression seems to be 21.8 and 23.0  so not too serious with low pressure boost turbo..

Still probably easier with less chance of messing up to swap the engine and box over if you have access to suitable lifting gear

pull the 1.9td and perform an explosivecabbagectomy.

replace clutch

fit,

go like fuck!

Yep, internals are different so you could be heading for a fast way to blow it up unless you replace the entire engine.

The answer to all turbo questions should be:

Yes/bigger/more*

*delete as appropriate.

Swapping engine and box isn't too difficult, just a bunch of nuts and bolts. Like Meccano, but bigger.

There was an instance not very many years ago where a batch of TD's got NA pistons & con rods - cue lots of warranty work with borked engines.

Oh and the NA cam profile is different to the TD - the TD is a "milder" cam profile. Not sure how a Turbo would act with an NA camshaft, might be a giggle and then again might me a quick road to pain.

That'll be a "NO" then as I'd be working in a road side parking bay not generously supplied with engine hoists.

I'll tell you what might be a proper giggle though - throw the head in the bin, with the fuel pump, tank and injectors and lob on the head from a J2TE 2.0 Petrol. The cast iron bottom end would take some serious stick and running a diesel profile cam in the petrol head would make something really quite aggressive. Im quite sure this was done some years ago either by Jim (CitroJim) Eastment or someone down that way.

Then up the boost and watch your clutch melt.
