I'm asking £750 for this on Gumtree.  However, I know I'll end up taking a bid on it.. so do your worst.

Bought this in a time of need.  I'd bought a v6 diesel Audi, and it's not really my thing so sold it on, and bought this to get me by, but now I want something with more poke, and my Mk2 golf arrives today, so I could do with this away from the house so I can pop the 4Motion I've got over and start using that for a daily till the Mk2 is done.

First some pics.

2000 Golf SE with the 1.6 16v 105BHP engine.

Cheap to run and insure, returning a average mixed of between 39 and 42mpg, some history as shown.

To be honest, it's fairly decent for what it is, but the Mk4 is a heavy car, so it's very much a do the job, rather than set the world on fire sort of affair.

Apparently they're similar to the 2.0 8v engine in terms of performance, but these deliver better fuel economy when doing mixed miles.  I've never driven the 2.0 so I can't comment on that...

It's a 2000 car, so has the nicer type MK4 dash with lovely blue illumination and the proper matrix display, privacy rear glass and rear windows, and a pioneer MP3/WMA CD player with iPod and Auxiliary 3.5mm input.

It's got Mk4 TDI wheels, they were on the car when I got it, they're round, the tyres are legal.. so I left it as it was.

Recently replaced the oil pressure sensor switch, which is known to fail on these cars (it was seeping a small amount of oil) and it's been incredibly reliable. There is a small blow on the front flexible section of the exhaust, I suspect caused by it catching some speed bumps. These are available on eBay from as little as £30.00, or the repair flexible section can be chopped and replaced with a cheaper item from auto factors, the flexi is on a straight pipe, it's easy to do.. but this car doesn't interest me.. I've got a beetle, and a MK2 golf that want my attention more, and it's not bad enough to warrant replacement just yet.  Apparently it's a subframe off job to fit, but, according to a friend in the trade, you can wiggle it through if you loosen an engine mount, again, it's not my MK2 or my beetle, so I've no interest in doing it.

The bodywork is bright and very tidy, aside from a small mark on the front lower splitter, some age related marks, and the usual MK4 golf corrosion appearing around the rear hatch, these aren't serious enough to replace the panel, or even bother with.. it's a cheap car, treat it as such.

The car drives very well, and everything works as it should other than the air-conditioning. I've not investigated this, but I suspect it needs re-gassing, the compressor comes on, nothing looks broken.

Clutch is smooth and not high, gear changes are fluid smooth with no crunching, and the engine is quiet aside from the small blow on the flexi at higher revs.

It'd probably benefit from a service, I've not got the oil but I do have a filter from when I had my Arosa, so that's in the boot.

Anyone remotely interested?

It's just what I'm after, in November when the wife gives up her Co car, currently broke though so glwts

it's a decent car.  Unfortunately I bought it from a friend, and as such I paid her about what it was worth, then had to spend a bit more on some stuff that needed doing.

As such, free, £200, £300 won't cut it.  And I'm not sure there's enough folks to do a raffle and me get what I need from it price wise!

Good car at a good price, but as folks say it's pretty much out of a lot of shiters' price brackets, as I found trying to sell a low miles 2000 Civic here for £750ish.

I got £800 from an eBay classified in the end, advertised at £895.

The other half expressed an interest in these yesterday... can't really spare the cash at the mo, as I'm getting married in a month's time!! Grr..

Dear Autoshite readers. Don't let this put you off posting your cars for sale on here. It's good to read about the cars that other "enthusiasts" have for sale, especially if there are good pics. Obviously it'll never sell on here though.

I might have bought this a week ago. Damm.

Too many motors to do swaps. I've got a 4motion one of these too., it's a decent car, but too adequate and normal for me. 1.4s with rot seem to go for more.. It's an odd one to sell

My wife (now ex) wanted a Golf as her first car so i got her one of these at BCA Peterborough, a 2000 V 1.6 8v SE in silver.  It was nice enough inside but i think it was a bad example as it never ran right.  The wheel bearing went on the way home.  There was a horrible hesitancy to the engine which i never sorted and lots of other things went wrong.  I've got a suspicion it might have been clocked too.  Yours does like a nice one though and they do keep their value as people will always but into the badge snobbiness of a VW.  I think you'll shift that pretty easily on autotrader or an ebay classified ad.

I have to say.. I'm surprised no one has commented on the Mk3 fiesta in the background on one of the shots.

No.

Saidy bought it from Lisa, who is from Spilsby :)  That's where you know the plate from.

It had gopping Lexus style lights on it.
