Big van wantage

I do like these, and the camper version in the car park at SF15 looked rather nice to me

They're pretty cool. I had one with a hatchback tailgate and side doors - insurance was a pain, harder than it was for Transits, as I'm not commercial.

Not bad to drive, not great to work on, but the FWD means a super-low loading floor so you can carry heavy stuff in and just step up into them, and the height inside is impressive.

Anyone know the best way to insulate a van?

I love the brutal/industrial styling of them. WOULD.

I think that's it.  And, as Richard said, the amount of usable room is huge.

I feel a trip to France coming on.  Domestic Management has not actually said NO...

A) What do you intend to do with it?

B ) do you want someone to go halves?

Something like Dynamat closed-cell adhesive stuff, but not as expensive when you have that massive area to cover?

Day van / weekend camper thingy.

Now there's a plan...

If only you knew someone who's job involves converting buses for other uses....

Master vans were great to drive, quite different to the Transits of the day. Cheltenham Renault used to hire them out for about the same as a Luton and they hold just as much, they are huge out back and, there is a great view!

I think there was a V6 petrol version, but that might be wishful thinking.

Insulation? Spray on polyurethane foam: a specialist job,not from a can! What GM used for their front drive motorhomes in the '70s.

Their "styling" is so good because it doesn't look like styling at all. Always remind me of Star Wars toys.

You can fit an Austin 7 in the back of one. It was slightly awkward getting over the rear wheelarch boxes but not impossible.

Knew a chap, used to carry 2CVs in the back of a LWB Sprinter.  One at a time, obvs...

Are you aware of such a person?

Autodata says it was available with a 91hp 2.2 petrol as the biggest petrol engine, I bet a V6 out of an Espace or something would be feasible though.

I like the idea of spray on polyurethane foam.

You could get a 2.5 turbo diesel with about 95bhp as well - they went quite well, although rather undergeared.

They're a nice van to drive, barring the usual shit Renault gearchange.  Possibly the least manoeuvrable vehicle I've ever owned though - in LWB form the combination of a massive wheelbase and shit lock means the turning circle is appalling.  I actually got mine stuck at the bottom of a cul-de-sac once after picking up a Kawasaki Z250.  It's the only time I've ever managed to get a vehicle properly wedged - quite embarrassing.

I love 'em too. The earlier ones with the neater grille are the best of course.

This one looks good - includes horse wee tide mark which has soaked through from the inside.

Thread revival...

Heres my bus , It is 1996 a late one so spot the modifications!

Recently took it to France where it blends in nicely. It goes well although it does get slow and the gears are-as said before pretty cruddy. I think the payload is supposed to be near on 1.8t and it must do about 27mpg.

I love it though , I am too young to afford insurance for 2 vehicles so it's my car as well.

Sofim 2.5 diesel has done 110k. I wouldn't touch a petrol but I know of one locally that i could get for £50. Quite tempted to get it for a few spares.

Good thing about this is it also has PAS, a  little luxury.

Have not considered that . Back in 2005 my dad ran his diesel carlton off veg oil for a while. Ran with a chip shop odour.

The diesel carltons are rare now
