Stuff the trade would avoid hence cheapness.

The mini would need a haircut.

The ka's would need welding.

The pug a diagnostic check.

The laguna setting on fire.

It's the fees that kill it for private punters at bca. Last car I bought at auction was from Scottish car auctions at Leeds and fees were half bca's

BCA final value fees are murderous for the private punter.

Not been to Manheim at Haydock for a while.

Carr Mill was autoshite paradise - most could not enter the hall under their own steam and had to be pushed in.

Rightly or wrongly I still suspect that most cars are in an auction for a reason. The reason is that they are usually borked in some way or other.

Got my wife's grande punto in auction and it's a beaut . The trick is to buy from the big chains like jct600 etc because all cars over a certain age go on the block not just the shit

Dealer trade-ins that's where most auction stock came from.

The Volvo S80 I bought from auction a couple of years back was a dealer trade-in, too old for their forecourt.

How bad are the fees at BCA etc for private sellers?

I know the local auction (Newark) was bad enough, on a £600 car my fees were around another £100, trade fees would have been nearer £30.

It's really stacked up against private punters. A sub £1000 car ( insert £50 Ka here) is £351 purchase and commission fee. 1.5% on TOTAL cash handling fee if you dare to pay in cash. 2.5% credit card, then they want another 30 quid to deal with the V5

Ive been -several times- over to blackbushe (Hampshire), which is allegedly the biggest BCA auction, near London, with the old man, n brother - buying 'youngish'/low miles ex fleet cars, for family /friends; whatever goes for telephone no's here, you cant get for about a quarter of the price over there, even with our greaseballs governments, non EU reg's compliant VRT re'reg tax included,....

...we usually only spend two days on the trip - including a Thursday (commercials) n Fridays (saloons).... one on occasion we spent 4 days over there n spent another day at the the Saturday morning 'total shitterz' auction... we got there just before 8am n the auction was already 'in swing' with damaged / salvaged lots bein auctioned - this was not in any of the halls, it was a 'herd mentality' where you followed a clipboard clutching auctioneer round  - a throng of about 25 'potential bidders' - all types of bottom feeders, including ourselves!!.... I got 'knobbled' in bidding n attempting to win ( by the old man spilling coffee over me ) an £800 80's RR silver shadow with interior fire - it was mint other than the steerin wheel n all the gauges melted!!... I remember thinking how 'unprofessional' n Arthur daly like, this 'guiding a rough  rabble of buyers down the back lots of dead dog salvage motors, was, to get them sold quick, for BCA...

We stayed on for the 'shitterz through the two auction bays' roll through - the auctioneers even seemed 'alooof' -getting through the lots quickly... as said above - zero value when you take into account BCA's fees - BCA even charge you a 'cash' handling fee LOL - folk buying such shitterz are hardly likely to have 'mastercard'....

From my past experience of working at BCA Brighouse for a couple of years, most of the stock was dealer trade-ins like what Skattrd done said.

Hall 1 (dull, newer, lower mileage stuff) was about 95% dealer stock.

Hall 2 (older, cheaper, more interesting stuff) was about 65% dealer stuff, 25% lone trader and 10% private punter.

Nearly all the 35% of cars from the trader/private people had some kind of major 'problem'. They would be brought in with instructions on how to drag it through a sale without highlighting said problem, before some paper money was received towards a back pocket for that service.

The van sales at Brighouse was always where the real action used to be. 90% of the vehicles couldn't be sent through the sale without any combination from the auction bingo card that includes jump starting, running badly, being pushed, smoking out the sale room (and the M62), bits falling off, no brakes, danger of death, etc.

There would always be a large contingent of travelers and many dodgy dealers and heated arguments and fisticuffs would often break out. It was never dull.

The infrequent 'prestige' sales at the nearby Plot 15 building are also sometimes interesting. Certainly for employees working on weekends with a large empty rally stage auction site and often exotic supercary stuff to play work with.

It was leading up to one of these sales that I discovered that the only car I cannot physically manage to fit in properly and drive at all because of my height is a Lamborghini Diablo. That was on a Sunday, I was the only person on site and it had just snowed. :-(

I wouldn't fear auctions...........after all it is where the trade get a lot of stock..............but I'd be wary of the night sales because that is where the shit goes! And I'd expect prices to be higher because more private buyers.

Got a 2009 decent spec Nissan Note for my friend at Enfield BCA a year ago and it has been faultless. Obv some stuff is shite but you can still get something good - I agree with the fees being stacked against the private buyer. I used to frequent the auctions a lot and have never had a shite car from them in all fairness.

There is another auction site in one of the trading estates that was a bit 'Wild West'. I never bought anything from there :)

I wouldn't be buying a Laguna DCI or a 607 in that sort of scenario to be honest. In sheffield there isn't any Auction type place nearby apart from the one at Rotherham on the barbott hall ind estate.

Fees on a 50 quidder were another 58 sheets. Still cheap for an 04 Ka with an MOT. It was rusty of course, but........

These are the multiple fee's charged by the robbing bastards at Central Car auctions in Glasgow. if you're a private punter. Unless you're buying something at 6-7 grand the fee's make any saving you may get pretty much pointless.

So on a 1000 quid car you're stung 245 quid + VAT (293 in total). FRU
