Le Mans - A place where you can see heroes weep

Oh. The race apparently isn't over yet. First and third in LMP2 disqualified for technical infringements. How very French...

I got back from this last night, an entertaining weekend again! Shattered now though. Apparently there was a bit of a fracas between the Porsche and Toyota mechanics after the race!

Third time he's tried to get it running.... impressive plumes of smoke indeed.

Bonus points also for the commentator sniggering after saying "snatch tractor"

we were amused by this, discussion in the kamp ranged on whether it had an edsel grill bolted to the front.

in summary

got home 1am this morning.

brittany ferries very good, both ways

drive down and back was enjoyable

traditional stop off at alencon sud maccy d was met with some dismay that no food was being sold, just drinks and cookies. we all had a shit, a double espresso and then buggered off

beausejour security tried to tell us 2l of booze / head. yeah right, fuck off,

camping close to the bogs got us a genny hookup for the freezers etc icey cold beers in camp

cycling to arnage/indy was well worth it.

village area was busy but not horrifically so, despite idiotic rumours the mad friday pitlane viewing was still free with GE ticket

LMP1 racing was frankly just shit

epic battles in GTPro and AM which kept us busy

awesome, planning for 2019 already

Apparently they had tampered with the fuel filler, the design of which is strictly mandated.

However, they were reminded by the FIA that they have the right to appeal.

Thus the current race result is declared provisional.

I have to say, LM has no appeal to me whatsoever.

The film was quite good though.

A few pics. I wish I had my camera when we went shopping as I spotted a 4 door corvair in pink and loads of 504's, 2cv's etc all in lovely used condition. I will try harder at the classic next month.

Great pics, thanks for posting! I am completely obsessed with Le Mans. I've got a good knowledge of the circuit circa late 60s but I don't recognise many points on the track from your pics, needless to say bigger run off areas and no trees to crash into right on the edge of the track!

I went to the circuit last year when I was passing and had a look round, my route took me past Rheims and Spa so had a pilgrimage there en route too.

I’m going there tomorrow for the museum. I guess you can walk the track too. Will be interesting to see if everything has been cleared out since the race.

A mixed trip for me, although thoroughly enjoyable. Trip down was the best yet (apart from picking up a NIP for 81 on the motorway in Scotland). Great meet at the Classic British Welcome at St Saturnin as usual, where the Cobra was given star parking next to the new TVR. On the way back to the Mulsanne meet, half way down the Mulsanne straight I accelerated briskly :-D  but the clutch span up and slipped for the rest of the trip. Friday night we went into town where we were joined by one of the LMP 1 drivers for a few hours (bonus brownie points for recognising him) and the lower class racing was superb.

Monday we decided to forego our usual back road route and stick to motorways due to the degrading Cobra clutch, and by the time we reached the tunnel I was doubtful it would get on the train, never mind home. By a miracle, it actually made it to Crawley, but the concentration required took any fun out of it. Yesterday morning it would not move at all, so the AA was called, the Cobra was collected and I was provided with a brand new Hyundai Tucson with 12 miles on he clock. I am back home and the Cobra should be here in the next day or so. Top marks to the AA.

The Austin A60 as correctly designed and built by Peugeot. I can recall these being used as taxis in France in the '70's.

Amazing. The track has gone all French and they're having to weld up drain covers!

I love the contrast between the hundreds of millions that the teams spend on development for this event and the ACO chugging out in a knackered looking 15 year old Renault van to make repairs. So French!

A bit late in the day but there's a 24h GT3 race at Spa this weekend I played with the idea of going to to make the hat trick this year with LM and N24.

Live streaming in English from the organisers.
