with the timing belt you have the option of just replacing the belt, or going 'the whole hog' n fitting a full TB kit which usually includes the tensioner n a guide roller - they say on the EXPERT'EXPERT TDI'YO'FORUMS to do the full kit every 100 thousand miles...

The skoda estate I had was ex'diesel-assist old'man, then ex'diesel-assist sister, n was a bit worn out looking as her Spanish au-pair used it as her own personal rally car - anyways it originally came from UK with 61,000 miles on it - ex-fleet, anyhow, my dad n my sister got charged for 'changing the TB' - every second service, but it never got done at all 'in reality' - n one of these way a main dealers - scrawling 'TB DONE @ 105,000 miles' on the invoice was all that's done...

My brother n I were cleaning it up to punt on, so I did a full 'non mythical' TB change, kept the receipt/took pics of the process' etc etc to ally any 'prophesies of doom' a potential buyer might have/moan about...its not a hugely involved process - just lock the cam opposite the cam pully wheel end (theres a slot there) using a three toothed bit of 4mm plate - a grinder can be used to make the gaps, with a torch, rotate the engine via the crank pully nut to TDC through the hole in the gearbox... all simples enough; I don't  think anyone competent with the spanners can fuck it up much, unless you suffer epilepsy, and randomly have a fit while putting the new belt on, or something....

I will have a timing belt kit winging its way to me courtesy of Lacquer Peel of this here parish.

Amd some other stuff too:)

With luck should be all done and otr next week

Having been oot furra swatch, and it looks like the boot sticker suggests it has an ALH lump-is that a good , bad or indifferent thing?

Posted

Did you get the parts? Tracking suggests a delivery was attempted.

I'm not sure what ALH means, but they made some minor changes around Y2K, it's still similar to the older TDI engines.

Posted

If you bugger it completely, there's an ALH head in my garage.

Had a note to say they'd tried..

Burd is in the morns for when attempted retry of delivery occurs.

Excellent news!

The ALH is the second strongest VE TDI engine, i have one in my Caddy van, i think the ASV is the strongest cos it has under piston oil squirters. Yes i know i need to get out more.

Good knowledge. Sounds like it is a reasonable lump then

ALH is as they say' a good lump' - its similar to the AGR (90bhp) but the loom has the extra VNT turbo 'talk to ecu' wiring - the skoda estate myself n the bro had off dad/sister'assist was ALH n its a breeze to do the TB on these...

...as it has the VNT turbo you can fit a bigger one off a later 110's n 130's, swop intke manifolds then remap (£££€€€) if yr into all that, n colour in the D, n I on the tailgate with a marker/humbrol paint...

thers lotsa bad info on these cars tho - allegedly the ALH auto has bigger injectors n pump, but as with a lotta VAG shite product lotsa 'myth info' on whats actually in them...

First run from cold to the station. 10 mins in town traffic at 8am..

Even if it is 10%optimistic, its still nigh on 42mpg from cold with 100l of veg and 50kg of tools in the boot

As I understand it a later PD turbo would fit too? On the ALB it looks like the 90 and 110 share a turbo,.so no point in swapping apart from to thr larger nozzles?

If you're looking for extra performance on the cheap, remap first, can be done for v.cheap if you diy.

I have got an ebay flashing cable you can borrow for £post, did my fabia with it from 100>130 horses.

See if you can find some software called vagedcsuite, can send it to you when I get home if required.

Find an alh map and have a poke around.

Have also got some guides on what to change saved somewhere, but it's pretty much a case of find numbers, make bigger.

I would be very much definately interested in this!thanks for the offer chap:)

Looking at the info I can find, my 90bhp has the variable turbo-its just in need of the larger nozzles off the 110 and a cheeky tune.

Cheers

As mentioned at SF, I may have some spare 110 nozzles shortly ;)

We should natter

You can also use larger t4 injectors instead, without changing anything else you should see 125-130bhp but with a little more smoke.

Please get this running like the 335, even if only temporarily!

My last one was an alh and did 52 round the doors no matter how heavy my foot was. And genuwine 61 on a long run. Pd turbos go straight on btw,i had a bora (non pd)with a blown turbo once, and pinched the turbo off a pd i was rebuilding. Bolted straight on with fannymould. Think oil feed had different kink though.

Laquer peel has lots of good bits i believe and is a good guy

All good news! Lacquer peel has posted many bits ftw:)

Good news re turbo too

This turd has a 90bhp ALH engine and is completely stock.

It came with 3/4 a tank of Diesel, and I have just purchased 100L of 1 micron filtered WVO as well.

Now the brakes are sorted I should be in a position to start running a full tank of diesel through to get a baseline mpg in normal use. The car has a 55l tank, and will be fully serviced prior to starting the experiment.

Then I will run a 20-25% (11-13.5l)wvo mix through and compare.

The next tank will be a 40-50% (22-27l) wvo mix.

Then 65-75% (35.5-41.25l)wvo mix.

Lastly i will try 85-90% (46.75-49.5l)wvo mix

If wvo cannot be sourced, I will substitute with fresh SVO as required.

I can keep a log of any running issues encountered, and mpg figures per tank, along with an understanding of external factors.

I will have a supply of fuel filters present to allow swapping out as the system initially gets used to the svo.

Dependant on my mileage I should have data complete within 3 months or so.

Yesterday was the start of this experiment.

Car had the brakes repaired and the tyres checked/properly inflated. I also checked the oil level and topped it up. A full service kit will be ordered this week.

To start off it was time for the baseline all derv tank:

I filled from just over half, and using the tank vent managed to fit in £29 @ 119.9/L (24.18l)

I then reset both readings on the trip computer (1&2) and took a leisurely drive home via a mix of Motorway/town and B roads..

I think I got about 7% less mpg on 100% veg (SVO), very little difference from norm at other percentages. Actually, I only usually run veg at 100% or 50%.

Be careful you do similar journeys with similar hoonage or your results will vary just with driving style/circumstances.

The Bora link in my sig is 65k miles of logs from me, but not very accurate with what was in the tank.

The only time I dropped below 50mpg was in winter with a broken thermostat.

Cheers Chris- will bear it in mind!

Passed 100miles on this tank today- figures look fairly decent. Got some good runs about the place-70%motorway, 30% town

Tomorrow may kill them though, as it is a cold start hop to the station..

400 to half a tank is bloody good going, are you hypermiling or driving normally?

I do occasionally hoof it in mine, but usually get around 300 miles to half a tank (75 miles per 1/8th)  and have the display showing 62-64mpg. When calculated properly this comes out to around 58mpg. I reckon the display on mine (with the correct sized tyres) over-estimates mpg by 10%, if yours is the same, that makes it around 65mpg, which after 100+ tanks I have never achieved.

Yes I know I am sad, but I spend a lot of time behind the wheel of this thing, and playing with numbers keeps my mind active.

If I take my average MPG from over the last 16 months and divide it by my fuel tank size I find that my car would conk out at 300 miles. Jealous of you I am.

If you think that's sad you should see my MPG tracking spreadsheet...
