retrogeezer Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Did anyone see this last night???He was telling some guy with £5k's worth of 4x4 and a £12k loan for it that it was a wise idea to chop it in, borrow another £4k and buy a new Peugeot 207!!He justified this by telling the chap it was costing £4.5k a year to run the 4x4. Now I know they are dear to run but advising someone already in £12k of debt to borrow another £4k is surely not a good idea.He also advised a (rather attractive) young girl to buy a £1400 Y reg Ford Ka over a nicer looking 04 Punto that was £1800 (supposedly). He then proceeded to open the passenger door of the Ka straight into the door of the Punto.
Owain-328i Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Yeah i saw it, still enjoyed the program, i like Quentin Wilson and its nice to see a half sensible car program on TV instead of the usual drivel seen on top gear.
Milford Cubicle Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Those Quentin Wilson 'specials' on ITV are dire.Last year they had a special on beating the fuel prices - cut to an image of QW pouring neat veg oil into a modern common rail Astra van.Great work!
Timewaster Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Did anyone see this last night???He was telling some guy with £5k's worth of 4x4 and a £12k loan for it that it was a wise idea to chop it in, borrow another £4k and buy a new Peugeot 207!!If this is Dracula's idea of advice - I'm glad I missed it.Maybe he should do another of his channel 5 shows.Britains worst...........Motoring pundit.
Owain-328i Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Gentlemen Please! He's not that bad!! And its pleasing to watch something half sensible for a change!Instead of Pianos bein dropped on cars and wildly expensive super cars that i'l never afford being thrashed round a track. How informative.
aled Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 the lady in question had 2 k to spend i think the best buy would have been the kia (2 years manufacturers warranty left on it and low milage) ok not really good looking or set the roads alite but it would have been reliable. the ka will most probs need about £500 of welding shortly
retrogeezer Posted January 13, 2009 Author Posted January 13, 2009 Yeh, anyone here would have had the Kia for sure....but not a hot 19yr old blonde!
garethj Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Yeh, anyone here would have had the Kia for sure....but not a hot 19yr old blonde!Actually I'd prefer a hot 19yr old blonde Hang on, what sort of Kia is it......
monzaE Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 he was talking utter rubbish. The sums were wrong. The bloke with the Rover was spending £60 per week on fuel, £3,100 p.a. At 25mpg that's 15,500 miles p.a 15,500 miles at 50mpg in the Fiat at £5 per gallon is £1,500p.a £3,100 minus £1,500 is £1,600, approx what he was shown in cash as a saving i.e. £1700. (OK my sums are rough and rounded but near enough)No mention of depreciation, the largest cost on a 2008 Fiat. No mention of interest on the loan.
Hertz Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Yes he is a complete tool £1200 MX5 - "Don't buy that it's going to keep depreciating down and down losing you hundreds of pounds" Err don't think that a N Reg MX5 will ever go under £1200 Quents! And - "Go and buy the new car and save over £4,000 per year in running costs, your not listening to me are you?" Err no Cretin, is this new car free is it? Oh and how about the 40-70% depreciation you talked about at the start of the show with new cars eh? Tosser!
Guest Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 The key thing to remember is that Quentin Wilson is heavily involved in the car trade, these motors were probably his. I reckon it was a nice opportunity for him to dump some stock and load up on cheapo part-exchanges.
garethj Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 No mention of depreciation, the largest cost on a 2008 Fiat. No mention of interest on the loan.I wondered about that, cos if a brand new little Fiat or Peugeot is A Good Idea, surely a 2 year old one is better?Or a 1984 Polo C Formula E which costs £200 to buy, £120 a year to service, £10 a year depreciation and does 45+ mpg.....
Pillock Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Depreciation? What's that?I've only ever sold one of my cars for less than I paid for it, and that was a blind ebay purchase. Overall, by never having a car less than 14 years old, I've made £25 after 5 cars

ashmicro Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Just watched that (thanks for the link AX)Quite a bit of misleading info and plain old wrong info too.As said by others, dodgy arithmetic, that MX5 will always be worth quite a few quid and the Ka came out in 96 not 97. May not necessarily always be cheap or easy to put right either. Seen quite a few Ka's full of wag and grot in my time, including my mother's old one, which was 2 years old.I generally avoid the Tonight program (and ITV News too) as it usually is sensationalist and scaremongering IMHO.
