Evening all, just returned from a fairly eventful day. Manged to... modify the Saab on the M6, an Espace braked hard in front of me, I skidded, and sailed up his arse. Everyone's OK (Jesus do the Swedes make solid cars)but the Saab... looks a bit worse for wear. My front bumper slid under his rear and is perfect, but the headlamps, bonnet, wings and radiator took the brunt of the damage. Now it was a very nice car beforehand, really top notch condition and of course very rare (30 left as it's the utra scarce 90). Sadly I fear the value is low and the work (I think it's just panelwork plus a radiator and distributor cap) I fear will nudge the whole thing towards the "writeoff" category. Frankly I'm a total newbie to what happens here... so what can I do? Obv I don't want to see it scrapped if it's saveable and can be remade into the safe and reliable car it was. But what do I do if insurance are being twunts?PS In the breakdown truck on the way home I was overaken by another 90. Sick as a fuggin' parrot. PPS Also had to be on the anniversary of getting my license!

In theory (assuming you're fully comp) you should be able to buy the car back off your insurance company as salvage, unless they decide to Cat B it, which I don't see why they would unless there was severe structural damage to the chassis or bodyshell. The problem is that Saab 99 body panels are not exactly easy to come by these days, so you'd probably have to go to a classic Saab specialist for bits, and most of those are rip-off merchants (have a look at some of Two Stroke To Turbo's listings on the Bay if you want an example). If you do decide to rebuild it I've got a mate who breaks Saabs who might be able to help, although good 99 front wings are like rocking horse poo as they always rot round the arches. Let us know how you get on - it'd be a shame for such an obscure old motor to get scrapped.

Shame - but at least everyone is o.k.And as above, hopefully you can keep the salvage, just be sure to keep all the documents and don't send them to the insurer.

Fully comp (on Lancaster), hopefully they will be decent. Might need to get in touch with yr firend wuvvum! Thankfully there's an old saab expert about a mile from me who's tinkered a fair bit with the family ones... might come in useful as he has some LOVELY cars (mustard 95 estate and 356) and always liked mine. Case of wait and see I think.

It WAS a honey....

If you want to keep it, then you might be able to buy it as salvage after they pay out, or repair it at your own cost. Try and keep the car in your possession whilst the process works itself though, if the insurance company take it away it can be very hard to get it back, regardless of what they might say. If it was on a classic policy the whole process 'should' be a lot easier.Good luck sorting it out, looked like a lovely car previously :D .

Just been told by the ----s it's a Cat B and I can have £100 for it. I am livid as it is CLEARLY repairable - FFS it's not even structurally damaged beyond a broken radiator, even the front bumper is intact, and I've managed to track down 90% of the parts I'll need to repair it (due to some top and very generous people). What pisses me off is that they didn;t send anyone round to have a look at it, but just used a photo. Also, how they managed to offer 100 from an agreed value of 1200 is beyond belief. Something is clearly wrong here but I'll keep you guys posted - i am determined to make them see sense!

Always alwas always reject teh first (and quite often second third and fourth) offers.Put together evidence of the cars value, ie adverts for simiar cars, evidence of money spent, recent photos etc.Demand a loss adjuster sees the car and emphasise that it is your aim to return a much loved classic to the road - DO NOT give them your V5 untill you are happy with the outcome.

Wankers....where did they pull the figure of £100 from FFS??Who is the insurer so we can avoid them!

Thats shocking, what's the poingt of agreed value insurance if they're only gonna offer you pocket change for your motor! And Cat B!?! That means it can only be broken? Damn these pen pushing gimps in an office somewhere... "Oh, it's an old car, offer him scrap value and we'll get that back by weighing the car in." C@NTS!

Cat B? £100? No Wai! Bastards!Do you still have the car and all documents? Tell them to send a proper assessor (is that a word? you know what I mean) and stick that offer in the appropriate place.Do you have any post accident pics we can see?

Good news - car, now Cat C, is coming home tomorrow, along with rather more money than before. Amazing what a bit of strop can do..... Now for the repairing part... I've managed to track down wings, bonnet, grille, radiator, and some lights, so feeling fairly good about the whole thing.Off to Romania tomorrow, so I hope to come across some solid shite!

Ah, result. It can take quite a lot of strop to get them to listen. Happened to a friend's 2CV. Quite badly mangled with with parts available and skills to do it, easy enough to repair. Negotiations worked favourably in the end. Worrying because fighting isn't really the British way, which I guess insurance companies understand all too well...
