Dollywobbler's Cornish Adventure

We weren't planning on having a holiday, due to no money, but when my family arranged a get together in Cornwall, it was hard to wriggle out of it. So, we loaded up the XM (all luggage, a bass guitar, ukulele and amp in the boot) and 5.5hrs later, found ourselves at a rather posh manor house in Cornwall. The XM looked right at home.

Lots of family stuff occurred, which mainly involved going for walks and eating LOADS of deliciously unhealthy food by way of reward. Then, a Cornish friend alerted me to a show he'd been to last Saturday. At the exact minute I was seeking further details, my dad yelled across the house that he'd found a classic car show up the road that might be interesting. Then my youngest sister said she'd like to go. No-one else was interested though. Apparently going to look at gardens was more interesting.

The three of us headed over in the XM. Found more chod in the car park.

There follows a brief show report. Starting with steam shite.

There was tractor racing. Who can go slowest. The one at the back was barely moving.

I was thrilled to find a British Citroen. Moggy on slot mags has certain appeal too.

There was a lot of Pajero/Shogun love. Bonus spot for the T12 Bluebird, which did later join the line up.

While my angle certainly exaggerates, this Massey Ferguson 1150 was bloody enormous, and had a V8!

It has been (unkindly) suggested that this is a vision of me in the future. I'm glad my little sister came along now...

John Boy paid a visit.

Magnificently wob-laden Mercedes-Benz 207D ice cream van. I've no idea what a Hawaiian Shave is and wasn't brave enough to ask.

Never let it be said that the Cornish have no sense of humour.

For a start, they let any modern shit line up amongst the classics.

Taking part in the parade was this astoundingly clean Shogun.

Finally, this was in the general car park and I really want one.

The next day, we went to St Austell, and I embarrassed my mother by taking a photo of this wonderful early 110.

Otherwise, it was a crap day for spots. The day after wasn't much better, when we visited lovely St Ives. Well, I say that. I did see a beige Acadiane and what I think was a DKW 1000 Coupe under a cover, but forgot my phone.

All too soon, it was time to return home. We had a good run back until this point on the M5. No reason for it, obviously.

Fed up with an increasingly busy motorway, we went to Cheddar and found a marvellously eccentric cafe. There are no food shots. Sorry. You can have some Amy Winehouse artwork though.

Buoyed by our non-shitty-motorway-service-arseholes approach to the journey home, we then stopped off in Crickhowell, which I have passed through many times before, but never explored. I captured this happy scene.

Some hours later, home was achieved.

The XM is now a whisker away from 123,000 miles and stupid central locking aside (it kept locking itself, so I took the spare key with us just in case), was problem free. I still like it very much. Next trip away in it is the 2CVGB National later this month, along with the Trailer Tent of Win.

Yup. Like I say, nice mix of stuff. My pics haven't really captured the variety. Here's a better one of the Oldsmobile, alongside another terrifyingly huge V8, and a fleet of tiny triple-pot Smarts.

Multiplas are pretty damn fine utilitarian vehicles. I have tended to change cars with alarming regularity, but one constant in our lives over the last fifteen years has been the presence of a Multipla on the drive. Our first two were bought new and our current one is a facelift (ie crap looking one) that we have owned for nearly 5 years and I never had my name on any other car's log book for lthat long.

Can't say they have ever broken down on us but we have spent loads on keeping them going. Always go for a diseasel for driveability and a little bit of remapping helps...  :-D

Nice write up and lots of interesting photos. Enjoyed that! Glad to hear the xm behaved itself.

The slow tractor race sounds a little like something from Father Ted. Like the Saab spottage in Crickhowell. Have you done the spheres yet on the XM?

+1 on the multiplier. Diesel JTD being the engine to go for. The pez is too thirsty and not quick enough to be fun.

I take it you will be offering your testimonial to the Cornish Tourist Board?

I've got a JTD '53-plate Multiplier in that blue and it's for sale as new motor coming

Spheres still not done. Will see how the funds look at the end of the month.
