Now for sale  too many cars means stuff has to go same old story i know

Mot until 18th October

£595

Boston Lincolnshire

Focus  1.6 Automatic

Car runs and drives fine  and has been no fuss at all in the last year since ive converted it

Bodywise its a typical Focus   front doors are a bit grotty at the lower edges and the tailgate has a few scabs too but the main bodyshell is good and never been welded .

Reg is  V558EWE

Will add some more pics later

How i spent my bank Holiday weekends

Ive been happily running My   Cvh Sierra since last summer  this one

Ive seen quite a few now that have had Zetec 16v engines fitted and i fancied doing one so i kept a half arsed look out for an engine then in January this came along

A 1.8 16v  Efi Zetec  ( I know all cars are Efi now but i still fondly remember the time when Efi meant somthing special )

It was advertised cheap as spares or repair due to broken springs and sticking brakes . When i collected the car it came with its service history and an unexpected Mot until September ! and for what it was it diddnt seem too bad at all

So now i was well on the way to having all the needed parts for my conversion just a few other parts to organise and i could start the disection .

But then this came along

A cat B Focus 1.6 automatic

This had been written off due to a bump up the back which had creased the floor

Those that know me know i only drive autos as i have bad legs and the same people will also know that a set of automatic ingredients for a conversion would be just too much temptation to not have a go at . So now the Sierra Zetec project has spawned a side Focus automatic conversion project.

just what i need another "quick" project  !

So now a simple engine change has increased the fleet by 2 cars ! so time to get some work done

First job was to strip the automatic for all the needed parts for my conversion  so basically engine box , engine wiring loom & Ecu , selector lever pedalbox etc

Before i started taking it all out i sorted the wiring out i guessed the basic car loom would be the same on the 1.8 and the 1.6 auto would just plug into it  but i wanted to make sure the engine was going to run again with all its electronics in another car so i cropped the car loom back just to run the engine loom

Once the engine and box was out i set the electrics up and gave it all one more test once it was all out and independent of the car

Engine running vid

Stage 2  was to get the 1.8 engine out and fit the 1.6

so out it comes !

With the front of the car off access is excellent

While the engine was out i had a proper look over it and every brake pipe was rotten and the fuel pipes were turning grot too so while it was all out i replaced them all front to rear

Brake servo and master cylinders do not look fun to change on these :(

Next job was to fit the auto selector cable and the engine loom  , this is when i realised the very first part the fit to a Focus on the production line is the selector cables  , the entire dash and heater had to come out to get to nuts that hold them to the floor !

Once it was all out it was a 2 minute job to fit the selector cable  , i also fitted the engine loom and ecu and pedal box then put it all back together

Now for the engine

Before i fitted it  i replaced the cam belt

Lifted into place and all went together like mecano !

Built it all back up again

Started straight up no fuss so i am quite happy and the initial test drive all seems fine .

Ive just got to sort a few other minor trim issues and it will  be good to go ... and make a start on the Sierra

A friend of mine came over and said  " why diddnt you just buy an automatic one ? "

Why ! ?

That's an epic dismantling and reassembly story. Reassuring to hear that it all worked afterwards and I bet there was cursing when you found out how to get to the selector retaining nuts. I take my hat off to you !!   Great pics.

Excellent spannering!

Glad you saved the 3 door,I think they are a neat looking car :-D

I normally remove the gear cables by cutting a access hole through the sound proofing,

then use a ratchet spanner to remove the nuts.

Wow you`re keen!

Personally I would of fixed the blue one, much easier! But fair play to ya!  :)

I thought about it as it would have been a very easy repair

but the cat B write off status would have meant a vic check and could have been a problem to insure

Amazing stuff. Jolly well done that man.

not sure, I`ve only ever had cat c and d so you may be right

Now you need to get spannering on the Sierra....

However well done on getting the Silver one converted to Badermatic spec. Top bombing there Stixy

My nearest Vic place is Peterborough so 120 mile round trip  ,

And i am not really sure how a cat B escaped the "system" and wasnt sent to A.T.F  the bloke that sold it me said he had been paid up for it and was adamant it was his to sell  so i diddnt argue and just took it !

Fantastic. Your mate has a point though...

It's great work but still confused what outcome is meant to be. Are you trying to create a 1.8 auto?

Posted

Category B means should be crushed, and not safe to repair.  Interesting as that car looks like a Cat C to me, and not even a particularly bad one at that.  I only hope that this isn't a trend to push more into Cat B.

I think you'd have more than a few problems trying to insure a cat B!

Great work Stix, thorough as ever.

Great to be able to get ahold of the cat B (he definitely is risking his ticket selling it to you!) and probably not the time to tell you that Cat C VIC has been so poor at getting ringers off the road, VIC is getting abolished in 5 months time.

Awesome - Gold class autoshiting.

No, its not a super rare horsey horseless prototype, nothing scene, not a good car, not even a bad car....just something average getting way, way more time, work and attention spent on it than is reasonable, sensible or financially viable.

This is what makes Autoshite great....yeah its nice to see show reports with pics of shiny whatevers lined up and obviously cherished but surely back-to-basics shite-ing is doing exactly this sort of work.

Really?

I`ve just bought another Shogun that needs a VIC check. So if I wait 5 months I can just get a logbook and tax it?

The 1.8 zetec will be going into a Sierra at some point with an auto box  and the Focus will see out its time as a 1600 auto

I bought the car off the owner not a yard   . I know the Vic system is getting abolished  but the identity of the car wouldnt have been the problem  its the cat B status . The car was stripped and nothing any good was wasted

It was not that bad i would have just pulled the back pannel / boot floor out enough to let the hatch open and close properly and that would have done

Ive had cat D cars with more damage

had a cat c fiat brava jtd with a broken grille once. sent it in for its vic with no grille. passed no issues. the systems a joke.

VIC is a vehicle identity check and nothing more. They just check that the details on the car match their records, to make sure that the car isn't a ringer.

They don't check the quality of repairs, indeed you can take a car in with damage still present. It is the DVSA though, so they will issue a prohibition notice if it's that badly damaged it shouldn't be on the road.
