Tell me about...superchargers.

As a counterpoint to the turbo thread, educate me/us on the mechanical marvel that is the supercharger.

Driver by the crank via a belt, as opposed to exhaust gas a la turbo.

Used to be the preserve of larger engines, as the set up saps power because the crank is driving the supercharger even at tickover.

the xj-r has one, using alchemy it turns (rather alot of ) petrol into (quiet abit of ) speed, at a terifying rate.

the lowest i've gotten the trip cpmputer thing down do, breifly, was i think 4mpg.

the transmission was in sport, and kickdown, plus my foot was hard to the floor at the time.

lots of fun.

I like this thread already.

I am in the market for an Eaton M45 from a Mini.

Boost rises proportionally to engine speed, so they have more linear power delivery than turbos. More importantly they whine rather than whooshing. Which makes the better noise is open to debate

I have a bini one fitted to a 2.0 efi 8v sierra twink in a mk3 Cortina doesn't seem to effect mpg pulls like a train & screams like a banshee with toothache.

& i'm building a frankenstien 2.3 8v that will have an M63 from a merc kompresser (with what appears to be an electromechanical clutch?).

Some of them are twin screw.

Which is not as porno as it sounds.

M62, from an M111.973 or similar unit (CLK 230K/SLK230K etc.) - yes, it's an electromechanical clutch. They actually engage pretty much all the time unless the car is idling/out of drive, at which point they engage at 2K but leave the bypass bypassed.

Can I be the first to bring up Mad Max and his infamous lever-activated* Weiand?

A chap I know owned a x plate xjr 4.0 I think it was. Damn that thing was scary and stupidly fast. He took me a run in it and seemed to hit 140 in next to no time.

It's not a drag car thought is it? Did you see the tyres on that other one the hellcat was never going to get it's power down as well compared to something with massive drag slicks.

I was impressed to see it being wiped out by a tesla model S though.

i've seen an mg zt v-8 at the nec last november which had a rouse(?) supercharger fitted.

it pushed the output up to 550bhp, which i think would be pretty scary even in a straight line....

Ha ha..... Supercharger 'whine' lol

Whilst under warranty my PAS pump bearings failed, for the week or so before it went into the dealer, the 'banshee howl' was most entertaining...& engine speed related!!

Glad I didn't foot the bill ;)

How are you sorting your fuelling and timing - are you running any sort of management?

On the M111, there's an inlet cam solenoid that alters timing at a certain rpm (2K I think); the charger spins when things are working, then the bypass valve controls boost IIRC. They run an intercooler. Anyway, you just need to give it 12V to energise the coil to get it spinning - if you set up mapping, you could have power & economy modes, but I think you'll want to use the bypass valve rather than the supercharger clutch anyway. There are diagrams showing how it works in the SLK but without the SLK management I expect most of it is just "set up as you would a permanently driven blower, then give the clutch 12v".

my 2.0 one is as follows

original throttle body mounted before charger then after charger a pug 306 D turbo intercooler then into original manifold.

std injectors replaced with V6 Vectra ones rest is std brain etc.

been running this setup for about 6k miles.

theres a guy on sierra oc site running a mental one with allsorts of aftermarket cams, management ,turbo etc all developed by himself (as bugger all is avl for the I4 twink) now well over 300 bhp.

so as said my next plan is the 2.3 & M63 eng is done needs blower mounts next , but its on back burner at mo  (hopefully get back on it late summer) as box has gone on my pickup & need to sort this & so need to have a big sortout in this workshop.
