Love the Lada. Very jealous, would love one. The saloon looks far better than the estate IMO

Bad news about the 360. Two bits of welding and freeing off the rear brakes doesn't sound all that bad though?

It wasn't too bad at all but I couldn't be bothered fixing it. Enthusiasm for it was at an all time low and we had more fun ripping it apart than I've had driving it.

I needed some bits for the other 360 so with the mot failure and complete lack of desire to sort it I could justify breaking it.

Nice one.  Good that you've already got new wings on it, hopefully any repairs under them were done properly first, as they do like to rot under there.

I personally prefer the look of the estate, but reckon that the saloon is a slightly better drive.

Be interested to see how you get on with it.

Just make sure the steering box has oil in before it destroys itself, RHD steering boxes are a right royal pain to get hold of these days.  Tom over at Lada can still get most other bits and pieces.

If you need a new lambda sensor for it (NLA apparently), I've got a working one on the shelf here.  Removed from mine when I converted it to injection.

Good on ya for breaking the 360

Its a good feeling breaking an ungrateful car that people may want to buy but only for pennies.

As for the 604. I would love that but only if its running. Not scared of the rot but a car with a half dismantled engine is something I wouldn't buy.

By the way, you know with Lada 5 speeds you are supposed to fill up the gearbox then undo the gearstick and add more oil? Although I forget how much, its been a while since I played with Ladas

It's a royal pain to do on the Riva because the carpet is in the way.  There's no easy way to get to the top of the box like there is on the Niva, where it's accessible simply by removing a couple of screws and lifting the top off the centre console.

Usual solution instead is to either park the car on a slope or jack up and support the nearside before filling the 'box to get some extra oil in.

Also best to use the old saying of "fifty for the sake of fifth" meaning to only use fifth gear from around 50mph upwards to ensure that the 5th gear cluster gets sufficient lubrication supplied.

I originally thought that only applied to the Niva, but apparently it is also an issue on Rivas sometimes.

I remember having to fill my Niva's gearbox by removing the gear knob, I didn't realise it was an issue with the Riva gearboxes though. As expected the Riva has some issues with the crap carburetor but there's a weber here to replace it with.

For some bizarre reason they have removed the airbox and fitted some gauze type stuff on the carb. I'll need to source another airbox because it didn't come with one.

Here's the Weber

Got an airbox here (it's different to the injection one) if you want it.  Yours for cost of postage.

PM sent regarding the airbox.

I got on with fitting the Weber today.

It now runs without stalling but I need to figure out how to bodge a throttle cable onto it as well as a manual choke.

Just looks so "right" - health to enjoy and all that

Yes it does :)  It looks very much like my last one, G328 EKC, with the addition of a non-matching wing.  I couldn't give it away in 2001, now I can't afford to walk past one, even if I could find one!  May it serve you well.

Airbox will be in the post today all being well.

Fitting a throttle cable is a bit of a faff as I've found while trying to do the same for the injection kit.  Currently I've got a distinctly bodged together arrangement involving many cable ties and half the old throttle linkage and the pedal end of the cable lashed to the engine lifting eye on the manifold.

The real headache is that the pedal is hinged in the engine bay rather than in the cabin.  I've a plan to modify a Niva pedal so it clears the wheel well and attach that to an adaptor plate, probably fasten that in place using the bolts for the brake master cylinder as they're already there and access to drill new holes will be a swine.

Just drilling holes and using the Niva pedal straight to the bulkhead won't work as the steering box is in the way of where the bolts want to be...

I'm sure there was a cable adaptor or something supplied with the Webber kits originally that made this *far* easier.

I still want to know what the designer who originally came up with the throttle linkage on the Riva had been smoking.  It is so ludicrously overcomplicated...think there are eight changes of direction involved between you pressing the pedal and the throttle actually opening...

Parts can be had very cheap from a few gents off Facebook (if you get stuck let me know, speak to one or two folk in Finland, Russia and believe it or not even Germany are a source of good parts)

Get that wing sprayed, ensure Sills etc are clean and fit some arch protectors, then you've got yourself a good £1500 to £2.5k-ish Riva, prices have not got mental 'yet' , but certainly on the up !

I think the jacking points, floor and chassis legs need some attention. The previous owner never made any mention of these areas but I was expecting it to be worse anyway.

My plan for the carb linkage is to weld a bracket from the old carb onto the new one which the original Lada bracket will fit into, hopefully get that sorted today.

Yesterday I spent the day replacing the front shocks and springs on Mrs foads 360, the other day we replaced the anti roll bar, cross member and drop links which we took from the broken 360. I borrowed some bits from this one months ago and it hasn't been able to run in ages so it was good to have it in running order again.

I've been using the 305 a lot recently.

It's been incredibly handy in the snow, it goes anywhere and feels incredibly stable due to the near new winter tyres that I picked up for £60 fitted to the 106 gti alloys. I've been using it so often that the 406 has been neglected and left at the end of the drive. I'm probably going to put the 406 up for sale or swap soon.

Great to see the 360 back in the game, satisfying when you can make one good out of two bad.

Foad, still have the towbar? If so what's the asking please? My 340 off the road as it's being an arse. Common problems though what are causing issues.

I had originally planned on removing the carburettor from the car but it was easier to get the correct position when in situ. 0a3787d671145c0d9f63f51ba51c8d31.jpg

I'll need to figure out if it fits a 340, it was on a 360 which has a spare wheel well. I don't know if that makes a difference to how it is fitted.

That's a very neat solution.

That bracket attaches to the mounting points of the carb doesn't it?

If so that somewhat annoyingly means that it's not going to work simply for me as the manifold studs are in completely different places now.

...Does definitely point me in the right direction though.  Might have a look into that if I get a spare few minutes, especially as it's off the road for now while I fit the new fuel tank, pump, tidy up the piping and likewise sort out some of the wiring loom as some of it is laughably too long.  Also need to actually make somewhere for the ECU to live as "wedged where the glovebox should be" is less than idea.

As an aside, if you're sticking with the Webber carb, could I ask that the ECU that lives beneath the passenger seat be saved?  They're somewhat fragile, prone to failure and can be bloody hard to find these days (as they were only used on UK cars, and even then only for a few years).  Likewise the original carb actually...even if it's a bit sick it can probably still be rebuilt.

No use to me obviously, but I like to try to do my bit to save useful bits from the bin for other Lada owners.

Ah. Possibly not then. Mine has the wheel under bonnet and mounts behind the bumper

The Riva surely should have the 'electronic' carb on it?

It did but it didn't really work.

I've been having some bother with footman james who have pretty much blacklisted me from taking out any more policies, they said the ones I have with them will not be renewed when they finish because I made too many changes to my policies over the years and they looked up my phone number, found some old car adverts on gumtree and came to the conclusion that I'm a trader (which I'm clearly not)

I don't know many traders who use their "stock" for personal use, add their names to the v5 of every car they buy and don't rely on car sales to make a living.

I have a full time job as a welder which enables me to sample old cars that I like and sell on or swap the ones I don't like.

Surely if I apply for a trade policy I'd technically be committing fraud?

No one says you have to make any money, and they do accept part time traders.

Might be worth ringing some places and seeing what they would require as proof of trade in the event of needing to claim, if all you have to do is buy/sell 4 vehicles a year then you're sorted.

And as a bonus, you'd never have to pay an admin fee to add a new heap.
