garbaldy Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 How is the proton dead it looks OK from this side.
Lacquer Peel Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 I will definitely have this epic proton pickup truck (as discussed on my visit to yours)! All I have to do is hatch a plan to recover the beast. Top priority is that it arrives in Thornaby for as little cash monies as possible. Me thinks a 1.9 xud should do nicely in thisI think fitting an XUD would involve serious fabrication, the gearbox is on the opposite side for one.If you can find one, a Mitsubishi 2.0 diesel out of an old Space Wagon would drop in with less bother.
DodgyBastard Posted October 31, 2015 Author Posted October 31, 2015 These broken cars are fairly mounting up, soon enough I'll have no working cars... Did a bit of welding on the Niva and went to start it and it turns over, the pump primes but there's no spark. Maybe the coil pack or ecu has fried because I forgot to disconnect the battery before welding... Until I can get another coil pack or ecu I'll just have to spend the time making it pretty...
dieselassist Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 a bit of shit luck with the Niva - I rarely remember to disconnect the battery when welding on a car, n, in all these years, have yet to fry any of the cars electrical gubbins... dumb luck, probably!!
KruJoe Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 A few images from a recent visit to FOADworx2.0: Good luck sorting the Niva, bit of a bugger, that. The Riva runs ok, doesn't it? You may find some ignition bits are shared between the two - that may help narrow down the problem. fotorabia and vulgalour 2
Ghosty Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Is that an Espace wheel on the E30? It looks brilliant. Dick Cheeseburger and binhoker668 2

DodgyBastard Posted October 31, 2015 Author Posted October 31, 2015 The Riva has a carb, distributor and a separate coil whereas the Niva has single point injection, a coil pack and an ecu. I think the ht leads might be the same!
KruJoe Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Ah, it's a later 1.7i, isn't it?I wouldn't mind betting the whole lot would still swap over though! DodgyBastard 1
Christine Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 I can see where the pick up trucks rear glass was nicked from !
DodgyBastard Posted October 31, 2015 Author Posted October 31, 2015 I can see where the pick up trucks rear glass was nicked from ! Really? I'm not seeing any mk2 Transits in any of the pics.
Christine Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 A friend of mine was mig welding a p100 without disconecting anything . The alternator started smoking , and didn't work afterwards, yet neither the weld, or earth clamp was nowhere near the alternator or electrics.. How come ?

DodgyBastard Posted November 7, 2015 Author Posted November 7, 2015 are you still coming to Crail on the 8th? I will be present and I'm bringing an A frame, professional flashing orange towing beacon and a tow car so I have to get all planned up for sunday! Probably not, bank balance says no! I'll be around if you want to pick up the Proton though.
DodgyBastard Posted November 19, 2015 Author Posted November 19, 2015 Been offered a transit camper van for the red 340. It's tempting to swap... KruJoe and fotorabia 2
derskine Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Sounds a reasonable swap considering you have a 240 as well.
DodgyBastard Posted November 19, 2015 Author Posted November 19, 2015 The guy has now changed his mind about swapping, can't say I'm bothered at all.
DodgyBastard Posted November 22, 2015 Author Posted November 22, 2015 Proton mpi gls by srblythe, on Flickr Proton mpi gls by srblythe, on Flickr Proton mpi gls by srblythe, on Flickr Slowly running out of road legal cars, the 240's alternator is dying and I don't have any working backup cars that have an mot. Got the Proton painted though and I'm away to try and sort the 340's blower motor. vulgalour, Lacquer Peel, oldcars and 2 others 5
KruJoe Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 Shame about the camper Scotty, but the Proton looks flipping brill. If you cant drive any, at least you can sit and look at 'em.
DodgyBastard Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 240 failed to proceed... DSC_6933 by srblythe, on Flickr Last Saturday I noticed the battery light dimly flickering when I was 15 miles from home, I checked the voltage with the car running and it was putting out 11.5v. I drove home carefully then checked online for any quick fixes, I found out that the alternators rarely fail but the brushes on the voltage regulator wear out. I ordered another voltage regulator and fitted it today. The battery light was off so it all seemed good. After driving 20 miles all of the electrics stopped functioning properly, I pulled over, removed the regulator and refitted it on the alternator. I started the car and all the electrics, headlights, dash lights seemed to be fine. A mile later in heavy rain everything died again including the wipers and indicators. It was getting dark so I abandoned it until tomorrow...
dome Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Aye, my first alternator repair needed a, er, small correction before it worked properly. All part of the learning curve... DodgyBastard 1
DodgyBastard Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 In other news I bought some new valves for my rallye steels and fitted them along with a set of tyres to the wheels using our semi auto tyre machine. mercrocker Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 I like that Volvo. It must be missing its Southern home under all that snow though! Agreed re Ebay electrical twattery - too many times I have had my repairs doubled/extended due to fitting faulty parts then you end up chasing your tail.
dome Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 I know I've said it before but JCR supplies were spot on when I did the Jags alternator
DodgyBastard Posted December 2, 2015 Author Posted December 2, 2015 240 seems fine back on its original voltage regulator, the brushes weren't completely worn out so I'm not sure what's going on. I'll try and get a brush kit or an oem bosch regulator just in case.I fitted the rallye wheels to the 305, I'm not sure on the colour, I think beige would've been better.
