Just a quick warning in case this happens to anyone else.

I've received the following letter today:

post-17573-0-80787000-1429356635_thumb.jpg

Telling me that a vehicle I recently bought is without tax or SORN.

I could have sworn I SORNed it straight away, I'm usually quite good at that having been relieved of £80 once before.

Anyway £13.33 seems a fair deal to avoid an £80 fine so I goes online as instructed to try and SORN the vehicle in question.

It's already SORN.

Rings the Doovla to be told it's a computer error and I don't owe them anything, they will update the records and send me a new letter.

So do make sure you check instead of just coughing up if you receive something similar.

Funny, I had a similar letter to say one of my motorbikes was uninsured, which I thought was odd as they are all on the same policy. I went onto Askmid to check, and yes, it was on the database as insured. I did ring my insurers, who said I wasn't the first to ring them about receiving a similar letter.

Don't know why DVLA sent it, or how it was generated, but it did cost them some (unnecessary) expense to send it to me.

the DVLA get on my tits. firstly they refuse to believe that i have changed my engine from a 1300 to a 1600. despite me giving them plenty of evidence to support the claim, including a link to a build thread! i even said to the guy that i am trying to pay MORE tax, not less!

next up they refuse to process my sorn on the rialto, because i'm not down as the registered keeper. i told them the paperwork was sent off at the same time as the sorn request (trying to be efficient and stuff), but they still refuse.

7 weeks later, the new V5 turns up, i go to sorn it, and i get a letter informing me that because there was such a long gap between the purchase date and the sorn, they are investigating with a view to a possible fine!  good luck with that one you doovla bellends!

finally, they tried to have me for not notifying them of a change of keeper for one of two motorbikes i had sold. they argued the toss about losing the paperwork internally, until i pointed out that the one they processed was in the same envelope as the one that went 'missing'.  she soon shut up then

skid marks on the pants of humanity, the lot of them

and breathe.......

Apparently its best to not send more than one thing in each envelope to them as that is seemingly how a lot of stuff gets "lost" or screwed up.

I have sent several V5s off in one envelope and I have only got 50% back before. They tried charging me for the new ones but I explained that I sent them all in one envelope, they have processed two of them so have obviously received the other two as I sent them all in the same envelope by recorded delivery.

They accepted this explanation and sorted it out for me.

Anyone know why it would take them 7 months to send a new V5 to a new owner?

I bet they use post scanners. Instead of delivering your piece of paper to a humans desk, a post guy feeds the paper into a scanner, and someone else then decides where to electronically send it. If postboy feeds the paper in upside down, the recipient gets a blank page - what can you do with that?

Also if three things are stapled together, often only the front page gets scanned, the rest goes off to archiving. I used to work in such a place and half my week was spent rummaging through boxes looking for the cheques that were attached to application forms.

An inferior system replacing one that has worked well for years which quadruples errors and customer dissatisfaction. If that's not an accurate description of most things see days I don't know what is!

i'm still waiting on two red logbooks from when these where issued got fed up of being told they'd be forwarded. for two cars that have been in long term storeage/restoration, expecting hassle when its finally completed in the next couple of years as its been off the road over 30 years & will be tax exempt even though I have the blue log book & a full photographic log of the resto inc pics outside the workshop I collected it from approx. 25 years ago

I've just received an unexpected/ unsolicited refund cheque for one of mine, wuv's old Pintara.

It was news to me that I'd sold it, so I popped out to check it's still there. Yup, so that's a relief.

Best get on the dog to Doovla ASAP, as although it's not currently in the UK, it will be soon. Going to make for an interesting conversation, methinks!
