Turbo swede. Making the engine go BOOM!

Recommended Posts

Having seen a few 9-5's on ebay in the past with blown bottom ends at 100K put me right off, but maybe I'll give one a go...

As others have said before on other posts, full synthetic oil is a must on these. Saab specced it and if you dont then yeah the engine will sludge and bung up the oil pump strainer. Then oil starvation and hence bang...

Getting to the point now that most of the badly treated ones are dead and the enthusiasts ones looked after have survived.

I think saabs are pretty safe to put thinners in because the fuel lines are all made for e85 biofuel which is pretty nasty on rubber and plastic too .I used to put it in mine when I had the tuned ecu in it . It helped that , with trade discount , it was cheaper than petrol at the time.

Back in the early 90's. I was absolutely skint, couldn't afford fuel for the car. A mark 3 escrot. I nicked some thinners from the spray shop and chucked it in. All went well for about 48 hours, then the car conked out. No fuel getting through to the carb. I took the inlet pipe to the carb off and blew down it. clearing the blockage and off I went. Twenty miles later same again. I had to drop the fuel tank and clean off the strainer and drain all the fuel. There was big globules of white gloop in it. Some sort of chemical reaction had taken place. maybe the thinners I used was cellulose, and that had something to do with it. Anyway the moral of the story, be a little careful chucking other chemicals in the fuel.

She has been running ok for a while on thinners, I only buy stuff recommended by the saab community that others have tried.

In other news I have been spending more money on this old bus.

This bloke just got £400 odd quid of me for a downpipe, with the inter cooler that's £900 spent on a car worth £1000.

Oh well it's only money right????

Plus it's Xmas.

As I told Miss T it was only £15.32 for both I told her to buy some stuff in the sales.

they're still about. I got me an estate at the beginning of the year as I wanted one before the opportunity passed. 80K and full history (of sorts). As far as I can/could work out it comes down to has it had fully synthetic oil and has it been changed regularly. The aero's are allegedly a better bet, as they were always supposed to have fully synth, but the lpt wasn't initially specced to have fully synth.( As it turned out the semi synth caused gunge that blocked the pick up strainer

It's an easy enough job to drop the sump and clean / check it. Did ours as soon as we got it and it wasn't too bad in there. It'd been giffer owned and specialist serviced (if the stamps in the book are to be believed) so maybe seen more fully synth than average.

I looked on and off for about a year before buying this one - and there were 4 or 5 that i'd definitely have had if it had suited me that weekend, so they do exist.

And I really wish I bought an aero.

And I really wish I bought an aero.

I'm patiently waiting for a Dame Edna aero, with full heated leather (ideally vented too, but not seen one in new shape), memory seats (fiancée has the seat in a very different position to me), folding mirrors (must in a city) and not miles away! Ideally 55 reg so not ridiculous tax, but can stomach it if I find everything else.

Still waiting currently... Did find one perfect but sold before I could get time spare to travel there.

nice, ive got a 1998 9-5 s. its at stage 2 atm, but ive got a map marked killdeathfire. mine does the stupid loss of boost crap, did you figure it out?

Yeah first problem was a duff di, replaced with a new one, that worked for a while but failed again, new di sorted it. Also a dump valve sorted another problem, so did replacing some vac lines. Also a new apc valve sorted another problem. These are temperamental cars.

Looking for the same-only managed to find two so far, but one was provisionally sold, the other just didn't seem "right". Been looking at a couple of Saab forums and considering an earlier enthusiast maintained one. I had a 9000 years ago that I spent a fortune on (Abbott upgrades, Koni shocks, strut braces and polybushes, bigger turbo, Haywood & Scott 3inch pipe, etc). Absolute Q car as looked stock, but by God it flew.

Can't remember why I sold it, but the word "wife" seems to come to mind.......

Be very careful when using anything containing Toluene - It melts rubber like an absolute bastard, same thing to plastics !
So do be very careful Squire .

So this got dropped off three weeks ago at Nottingham Saab, to fit the intercooler and down pipe.

I couldn't be arsed doing it and have been away for three weeks with work coming back late Friday night and leaving early min morn, the last thing I wanted to do was wrestle with it getting it all sorted.

Also I needed a third d.i ignition cassette, this time I stumped up £££ for a original.

With that and the labour of fitting everything it was 600 odd quid. Oh so that's why I normally wrestle with cars to sort them out.

So anyhow that means I have splurged £1.5k on this since Xmas. Car worth £1k.

DOH.

Then another £80 this morn for a stage 3 remap.

Result is 295bhp and 450nm of torque.

Happy smiley face.

Little update on this Swedish fancy.

Well seeing as it's Valentine's Day and your meant to spend it with the one you love.

Miss T if your reading, here's one for you, doubtful but you never know, Leeroy might have a Laguna she rides in when I am away. Therefore she has been doing her homework on here.

Gave it a good clean, as since its been pumped up to stage 3 it's been full boost everywhere. So the wheels were caked in brake dust.

Use some stuff recommended by beko, as I ain't got a clue. Works pretty well. But pricey mind.

Since I have a bit of bling in the engine bay I bought a second hand rocker cover that I am gonna tidy up and paint crackle black.

Will make it look pretty smart hopefully.

So in the vain of loads of money being spent on a worthless motor.

I splashed out on a full stainless system. I have heard loads of stuff saying powerflow dealers are usually shit. The welding ain't the best in the world, but the bends are all lovely and it sits perfect. They got the noise just right as well, I asked to keep it pretty stock and it is just a nice burble on idle.

And it was with them from 11-6 and when I turned up at half five they was still making sure it didn't knock underneath and what not.

I have a Powerflow on my MR2, I think they're polished mild steel not stainless. It sounds great without being too loud, easily the best sounding exhaust I've had.

Surprise suprsie this thing decided to play up, a new spring in the actuator and a Bailey recirculating dump valve that makes no noise sorted it.

Since then it's been ace I proper can't help but boot it. Next step I think I am gonna splash out in some eibach springs and some bilstein dampers. So it's less canal boat and more motor cruiser in the handling department.

In other news I cleaned it.

I don't think you fully grasp autoshite, do you? :P

Awesome power figures though, must be a handful through just the front wheels!

Got to do a sump drop and PCV upgrade on mine- Twosmoke, you said Auto's are a bit more work? Never done an auto yet so what should I expect? I've heard some don't need any extra fiddling.

I ended up taking a small amount off the gearbox casting with a flap disc but it's just a case of jacking the engine up and down to jiggle the sump out .

Don't use silicone sealer on the sump either

Thanks-I've got some of the Fiat sump sealer, the grey stuff from the dealer- this should do the job. Have the rocker cover off and it's all clean in there, but still have the original PCV setup, so need to get it changed ASAP.

It needs to be an anerobic sealer . ie the stuff that only goes off when no air can get to it .

The proper gm stuff (or wurth) is like jam and it mixes with oil when it's not set . This means it won't block the very fine gauze in the oil pick up .

Basically if you leave a bead of your fiat stuff out overnight and it doesn't go off it will be ok to use

SAAB legend.... The Utoob of a 9k 'hooning' after a BigBmmer?

Afaik the fuel guage can be seen descending 'in shot'.
