I haz ovlov 240 - I'm Losing again.

Checked it out tonight and you know what I'm going to say, don't you....

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yes -  there was no fault today. Checked the voltage across the battery with the engine running - 14.2; as it should be.

Turned on all the lights and rechecked - now just 14.1v so perfectly OK.

 

The f**** little b***** is having a Swedish laugh at me I think. :smilie_auslachen:

The f*** Swedish whore has had me again. :angry008:

 

 

I fitted a new battery because the old one was goosed and wouldn't keep charge. Started it up and guess what -

 

 

those f*** lamps were on again. :smilie_auslachen:

 

The alternator is now off and egay will be providing a new regulator pack.

 

In better news - the tailgate struts are now on so I no longer need the old giffer adaption of a chunk of old conduit to wedge open the struts :shock:

I have replaced the three wiper blades.

I have cleaned off the remnants of the NT sticker :shock:  from the windscreen.

I've bled the clutch through to get rid of all the old fluid. At least the fluid now is clear in the reservoir. :-D

 

There's always something else that pops up to be done.

The tailgate interior lamp is inop and the on/off switch is goosed. Don't suppose anyone has one???? It is a different size from the normal door ones (why FFS), as I have already tried that...

 

I have cleaned up all the fuses and replaced those that looked a bit furry.

 

I also found under the rear floor two Hella torches - both with very leaky old batteries in them. Thankfully neither had leaked onto the trim or carpet.

 

New tyres and a regulator pack to go me thinks.

 

I think the Swedish whore may have other ideas.....

I reckon it'll be fine once you change the regulator pack.

 

At least it's getting there, hopefully the mot will go well. Certainly looks a solid old thing anyway.

It'll improve with use I expect once the mot is in the bag.

Although it's been a few days since I last reported in, work has been ongoing.

 

Fitted a new regulator pack. Not any of the Chinese s** from egay but a genuine Bosch one. :shock: It worked out much the same once postage was added in.

 

T cut the thing within an inch of its life and it does shine now - all over 8)  It's white now. I think it's beginning to like me now. :?

 

When I had the rear axle on axle stands I took the opportunity to spin up the axle and cleaned off the discs with 80 grade. :-D

 

 

4 new tyres went on today and just the rear No plate to refix. It was held with sticky pads but will go back on with screws.

Always raises a smile when I see a big old car without any electric windows etc. For some reason I like small cars with electric everything and big old motors basic but comfy.

The golden nugget ( rough old Saab 900) decided that halfway into Wales on the way to shitefest14 would be a good time to bring the charge light on . Whipped the brushback off in the campsite and gave the brushes a clean and she was good to go!

I've insured it today. :-D  :-D  :-D :-D  :-D  :-D  

 

After going through various companies I finally got a sensible quote. My problem has been I have no NCB to go on it. :-(

 

Anyway I have finally found that Lancaster will insure it as a classic car, limited to 5k pa and they are not asking more than the cost of the car. :happydance:

 

MOT Friday and hopefully taxed and happy days...

My old 244 was dirt cheap to insure on a classic policy.

Here's my old saloon. It was a bit rough and nowhere near as clean and tidy as yours!

Fantastic old barge it was, it was a sad day when I sold it on. I'd have another any day.

Had to unblock a washer jet to get it through but that was it.

 

Now to carry on sorting it like the 12N socket and cleaning her up a bit more. :-D  8)

No it's not that one, but that is the spit of my old one! Mine was a 79 V reg, CRL 99V was the reg. It got sold to Torsten on here (is he still around?) then sold again to someone on the blue forum who sprayed it metallic blue with a silver roof. Then put later 240 bumpers and GLT Virgo alloys on it. It was sold again but was plate raped shortly later. It's still got V reg plates but I can't remember the new number. It's in Scotchland now (surprise surprise!) and still around. Not what I'd have done with it but...

 

The one in your pic is lovely! I'd love to have another big bumper saloon, but an auto (old one was 4 speed manual) I loved that big old one I had, really regret selling it on but I had to when I bought my Granada as I had no room for both!

The Swedish w*** strikes again.

 

The clutch never felt right and it was clear the m/cyl was the problem. The new one arrived very promptly from Brookhouse today and so I thought - this'll be a nice straight swap.

No way - not with my ovlov having a laugh again.

 

Firstly I couldn't get the new reservoir to seal on the m/cyl. No matter how I postioned it or tightened it, the thing woulld not seal.

 

I thought a little tigerseal might help! After the showers and the sealer going offI still ccouldnt get that seal.

 

In the end I took the guts of the new one and put them in the old one.

 

I then took a mahooosive time to bleed through and finally after 6hrs I have a "proper" pedal. Woohoo

 

No bonus for me though.........

In far better news I did manage to fit a new "toy" .......................... A set of airhorns...........

This old beast sounds like it was enjoying its sleep off the road before you got to it! It doesn't want to be fixed and used again!

At least you got it fixed in the end though. Was the new master cylinder a genuine one? Maybe the new one wasn't the best fit/quality.

 

What air horns did you get? Dixie horns!?

I do wonde that myself. Although now it is out and about it drives well.

 

 

It was one from Brookhouse Volvo. The box was a Delphi one IIRC.

 

 

The airhorns are just a straight blast, twin tone.

Great day for doing nothing - however between showers I did get the 12N socket replaced as the old one was held together with insulation tape :?

Also took the opportunity to paint the towbar with POR15.

 

It's now done around 150 miles and no mechanical woes (so far). The cruising speed is around 55 - 60 being only the 4 sp box. There are a few niggles left to sort;

 

Water coming in on the passenger well through the fuse box :-(

A knock from the NSF on some rough roads (sometimes). Don't you just love the intermittent faults.........

More cleaning to be done.

Looks nice and tidy.

I know what you mean about the 4 speed. Mine got pretty noisy much above about 60mph! And it used to drink petrol as it was a carb model!

 

The water leak is probably the windscreen leaking from the bottom corners. Mine did it but only when on a slope one way! The other way round it was fine.

Also worth checking are the sills. I'm fairly sure the scuttle vents below the windscreen drain out down the A post (behind the little footwell vents) and through little drain holes in the bottom edge of the sills. They get blocked up by crap and leaves etc and the water can't run out so it overflows into the cabin instead.

Volvo carpet and under felt sound deadening is pretty thick so if the carpet is wet then there will be a fair bit of water under the carpet too. If it's a bad leak it fills up the front floor pan, then overflows into the rears aswell.

 

The 240 may be different, I can't remember, but my old 740 started getting a wet carpet too once and it was the heater valve leaking. Might be worth checking yours is actually water and not antifreeze/coolant. Hopefully it's not the heater leaking!

Definitely not heater water although they too are prone to leaks.

 

The trace can be seen above the fusebox on the A pillar and disappears behind the dash up in the corner. Tomorrow I will take out the glove box and check it out.

 

How do you get at the drain holes from the scuttle - does the vents in the A pillar need to come out?

From memory, I pulled the carpets back, took out the footwell/kick panel trims and vents and interior sill trims then you can get a bit of access to the sill drains. There's some little bungs to remove. Or try poking something (plastic is best so it doesn't scratch the paint inside) up through all the drain holes in the bottom of the sill.

Mine peed out water and old manky bits of rotten leaves the first time I opened the footwell vents and when I stripped it down to clear it out there was loads of crap in there. Amazing it hadn't rotted the sills out.

 

Another possibility is the wiper arms. The rubber seal sometimes leaks and the water drips down the inside of the bulkhead.

If you can see the water trace higher up it's probably the windscreen seal or wiper arm seals though. Possibly a good idea to at least check the sills are clear though, just to avoid future problems!

Well I took out the glove box and everything around it and then had water poured onto the screen.

 

It was p****ing in :angry:

Where the bung is, it was coming down from above there and straight down into the fuse box. :rolleyes:

 

So out with the extreme sealer and run a bead round the outside of the screen and the inside lip.

 

Time to find out once it has dried.

There was a gap between the screen and the rubber so must have been making its way through there.

 

Poured about a gallon over it just now and all is dry. Woohoo

 

On to the next problem...........

Hi all

 

My Swedish w*** is at it again.
 

The first one of the day was nice and easy. - replace the tailgate interior lamp switch. Tadaa - it now works lovely. :-D

 

This lulled me into a false sense of smugness. :oops:

 

I had to change on of the OSF flexi hoses as the old one was not letting as much fluid through as it should. This showed up when bleeding the top nipple of the 3 on the caliper.

Anyway things got nasty and I had to resort to physical violence in the form of an angle grinder to remove the old one. :angry008:

Here is the aftermath of the violence;

I had my faithful assistant (my wife) keeping the fluid topped up whilst I tackled the joint to the b/pipe on the car. This refused to budge and so to relieve some of the stickiness I ground into the thread area and hey presto - success.

Once this was removed and the new hose secured and clamped, the caliper end was a little bit easier

The brakes feel so much better now, as I do. 8)

But halfway into the job I could have sold the car for 5p and walk away. :ssch00101:

All calm again now.:thumbs_up: :-D  :-D

 

I checked the front bearings while I was there and I noticed the NS was a bit worn so my next job will be to replace both sides. I wonder what the little t*** will throw at me then.

It can be a bit like this with old stuff. I often feel the same with my cars, especially the Mercury. Things break or just don't work, you fix it and immediately something else breaks! But cars that have been sat unused are going to need a bit of effort and coaxing back to life again. It's all worth it in the end.

Your doing a great job so far though and it's getting better all the time.
