But only if you pay less than 300 sheets for it

Some of you have been close with the Pug 205, but the correct answer is actually the 306. Handles and feels much like a 205 but bigger, more comfortable and made near Coventry.

And the 1360 TU shrugs off maintenance with disdain.

Plus it's the spiritual successor to the Talbot Horizon. Case Closed.

Ahhh but the problem is the 306 dturbo. This invented the "diesel warm hatch" and is solely responsible for the rise of the TDI brigade.

So we are back to the 205 ;)

volvo 2/7/940 estate gets my vote. They are all the car you ever need. Simple, comfy, spacious, boringly reliable and long lived. Any lesser marque that reaches 300k miles whilst still looking superficially as good as new is not indicative of its type but a rare occurrence. It was neither designed nor built to last that long unlike the volvo. Building them so well is probably why volvo had to sell out to Ford..all those rich middle class people bought a new volvo and then just kept it forever never needing to buy a new one.

which all came with a legally binding excemption certificate that says you never have to use indicaters or mirrors ever again...

That's not something I've ever noticed with volvos more than any other make. Black Passat estates seem to be the worst driven these days.

Back in my two wheeled days it was generally acknowledged you had to keep your eyes out for Volvos.........they were the wanker chariot of the 70s/80s before BMW and then Audi took up the mantle.....

^ Poland.

You're all wrong, but some people were close with the Rover P6.

The best car in the world is OBVIOUSLY the series 1 SD1 Rover 3500: tomorrow's car, today, 40 years ago next year.

  • Quartic steering wheel
  • Runflat tyres (but a spare in the boot anyway)
  • Nylon velour with specially designed fibres that won't make your suit shiny
  • Plug-in diagnostics (in 1976!)
  • Styling stolen shamelessly from the Ferrari Daytona
  • American V8 power and soundtrack

Plug-in diagnostics?! Did it have one sensor?

The best car in the world for me should have a decently powerful indirect injection diesel engine with Bosch pump, long gearing, comfortable seats and suspension, big boot and decent towing capacity.

citroeen_xm_3_0i_v6_estate_small_28136.j

One of these with a 2.5 TD pls.

Not sure what it actually diagnoses - glovebox water level, maybe?

XM is a strong contender, to be fair.
