am looking at Volvo V70s too.

Have discounted Mercedes C class for wheelarch intrusion, most likely also Rover 75 for the same issues.

Citroen C5 is a possibility - and a decent one half the price of the above ...

here's a few ...

the last merc or the last bmw

530 better than 525 and its a facelift too

and cheaper than the other one which seems a lot for a 15 year old bimmer

c5 would work too and money for other tat/holiday

there's not much private stuff about right now and I agree about prices - I'd rather spent £600 - £800 but there's not much about.

First and second Merc seem ok, third has a hateful interior.

BMW 525 diesels supposed to be great and long lived, is the 3.0 one of the swirl flap munchers?

Last Merc estate might save you money as it looks like the front springs have already snapped, so will save you having to pay for them. There's also something about the whole advert that seems just wrong to me, can't put my finger on it but something's telling me to give that place a wide berth.

Faced with a similar decision a couple of months ago I went for a 2001 Volvo V70 XC, 5 cyl low pressure turbo petrol. After only a week it blew a major oil seal and is still in my local garage waiting its turn to be repaired.

In spite of the problem with mine I still think a V70 is a good choice.

40,000+ miles a year in two cars tells me a petrol is a no no!

And on these things, the savings are marginal in price.

I need a proper big loadlugger - something that will comfortably accommodate 700kg of payload and that means a huge estate - I already have a van for those times I want to carry more.

Posted

no there aren't - remember that that is just me and stock - so OK in a large estate. The Merc has Citroen suspension in the rear.

Posted

There are plenty of diesel Volvo V70s about but unless it is an ex police car I doubt if it will have the payload.

Is there a reason you're only looking at 320 Mercs ? In my business the default choice of car is an E220 diesel and I know people who won't change their cars till they've done at least 500,000 miles. I bought a 211 E220 manual saloon off a mate a couple of years ago as a spare. It had done 350,000 miles and was on its original injectors( had a few seals mind) ,turbo, clutch in fact pretty much everything.

Saying that I've run e39 Dizzlers to over 300k but usually need a turbo around 200k - pretty cheap and straightforward to do though.

no reason on the E220, apart from availability and sensible mileage.

Most E estates for sale seem to be E320s. It's the same reason I'm not so fussed whether it's a 525 or a 530D.

That 530d has got the more modern troublesome motor with swirl flaps etc . The pre facelift 530ds are pretty bullit proof but that isn't one.

525d is a safer bet

Posted

The 525d is basically the same as the 530d, the bulletproof* 525 is the 525td which is the same old boat anchor used in e34s,Omegas and P38 Range Rovers, possibly veg friendly but gutless and old fashioned - probably more desirable here, but for real life too slow and thirsty.

Posted

I doubt if a BMW 5 series tourer has the 700kg load capacity?

shhhh - I won't tel if you don't! But the load capacity is up there with the Merc and A6 - but I don't like the A6 - and they seem to be mainly a 1.9 turbo.

Posted

525d doesn't have swirl flaps or anything does it?

It depends..... automatics do and apparently some late manuals could have them. I had a 2003 manual and couldn't get a definitive answer, I erred on the side of caution , took the fucker apart and discovered it had never had any!

Posted

is it difficult to take the inlet apart to blank them off?

Posted

ah! That doesn't sound too bad.

Posted

The only problem I had when I took my 525 manifold off was losing one of the six paper gaskets down the side of the engine.and thinking I'd dropped it inside the engine!

Posted

I really don't like those mercs by all accounts they seem to be pretty shitey.

Posted

mechanically sorted but they did rust for Britain.

Sitting inside, I'm not looking at it! ;-)

Posted

last Japanese car I owned was a Z600 ...

Posted

D5 V70.
I've had some problems with mine (Which appear to have been fixed now) , but they are great cars.
Not sure of your budget, but some of the earlier ones are bargains.
