Hope your visit to Biggleswade was enjoyable!I have espied that uno - it's been there for a good few years now as I used to live round the corner from it. It was accompanied for a long time by a down-at-heel matching Seat Marbella. HAWT!The 1600E is a new one on me, but may not be local seeing as the pic is at the texaco garage (run by my next door neighbours - when we moved in they were delightfully shite with a Mongtego and Pug 309 - sadly these have been replaced with a LR Disco SII and a futureshite Ford Fusion!).There's plenty more shite around here - you were just yards from a timber-framed 'Hustler' with the 1600E shot

I've in fact been to the place a good few times during recent years as a friend's family live close to where the Uno lies. I'll be impressed if you can point out on a map where exactly in the town this picture was taken

Great finds lots of quality tat in edinburgh.. I've never seen any of those one before, although I do see shite there on a regular basis.There was a lot more until a couple of years ago, but the council are quick to tow away and crush abandoned cars now. Last year they crushed a very very tidy herald convertible.. when the notice of abandonment appeared on it i tried my best to track down the owner, but failed

That Dodge Space Van is the 'bee's'! . They obviously had a sense of humour calling it the 'Pace Van'! I wish it could be saved! They used to be everywhere!!! Now they're nowhere like so many other interesting vehicles of days gone by. Most of them I swear must have rolled over on cornering. Used to know someone who worked for BT when they were current, & apparently those van's used to roll over like playful puppies! You see more of the earlier Commers than you do of the last Dodge variety, but that's still not alot.

Oh yeah, my grandad lives in Langford which I believe is not a million miles from Biggleswade. We're all from round that sort of way. I was born in Hitchin, lived there till I was 11. Hitchin had (has?) one of the world's best scrapyards. Still tat here & there in people's gardens! Like to visit now & again.

If you look via Google Earth down onto Hitchin, the scrapyard can be picked out (if you know roughly the area) it's that big! I remember it as a huge mountain shape pile of auto junk & complete cars. Must have been 100 ft tall! Wow....what memories!

That van is fuggin luvly! I even like the little mural on the back! was that in Edinburgh? wonder what its rock n roll story is. The Commer van always makes me think 'British Telecom' coz as lil' un I have mamories of seeing them in BT regalia.As for the 2 Citroens; a pair of beautes and both proppo autoshite - especially the Dyane, a modernised and mildly breathed upon engine with a moderately good heater and it still didn't manage to replace the 2cv! what shite!Fact: Citroen Dyanes are actually SUPERCHARGED as standard! I kid you not, the air filter breathes not mere atmosphere but the air cooled air from the oversized cooling fan. It is at a higher pressure than ATM and mildly denser too coz it's cooled giving it forced induction. It gives the micro Cit engine a few extra HP and zooms it up to a whopping 85mph/136Kph -bitchin.

There's certain cars that I find hard to define as autoshite or not - a year or two ago the Dyane would have definitely been 'shite for me in the same way as a Mini Clubman or mk1 Golf was (failed to kill off the car it was supposed to replace) but now there seems to be so much of a cult around them and decent numbers of restored examples in existence that I'd say they've "crossed over" to classic status. Didn't manage to photograph a rather tattier example of similar age still clunking round Edinburgh all the same. The Ami on the other hand - last thing I was expecting to see oop north!

I think the "Autoshite" area evolves over time and fills the gap between nearly new (well over 8 yrs old) and over 25 yrs old (when for some reason they seem to be regarded a classics and people who scrapped them for little or no reason when they were common as muck get all nostalgic and want to buy one again to "restore")

Superb pics Mk2_Craig! I particularly like the Avenger pic, seemly taken from the top of a tower block at maximum zoom. I'd have had the wheeltrims off that 405 GLDT when I had mine - hose it down and I'm sure it would run again, those buggers don't rust!Mk2 Granada Injection is superb but those three spoke alloys - urgh!

I live not too far away and wouldn't mind a weekend away from Morrison for a change There is a fair bit of tat in Edinburgh especially in the outskirts. The centralised areas with permit only parking are mostly sparse as the good bu®g(h)ers do crush things in a hurry.

The yellow van actually looks to me like it might be an Allegro estate. The photo's four years or so too early for a Metrocab - my best guess for the white thing following the bus is a Transit window van - see my Jersey thread for a "nice" example still running.

 

Not sure what's behind the Dyane - 1981-vintage Corolla or perhaps an Alfa Giulietta? Red one overtaking the bus is a pre-facelift Skoda Estelle. Parked up to the right of the Marina is probably J-tat of some description. Does look to me like a Jugular about to overtake the Dyane, which is probably the most likely survivor out of the lot.

 

For what it's worth, the bus (probably recently delivered, and the reason for taking the pic) is a Duple Dominant, on Leyland Cub chassis which was basically a Leyland Terrier - locally built at Bathgate in West Lothian - with the mechanical components reshuffled for better passenger access. Leyland commercial model names were strange - trucks were dogs (Mastiff, Boxer etc) while the buses were cats (Leopard, Tiger and so on).

 

Old bus pics are great for the long-gone street furniture, chain shops and automotive tat in the background - buses are an easy target for photos because by and large the enthusiast knows where and when to find them - consequently there's a lot of this sort of photo around. Whereas there's probably very few photos of supermarket car parks for example.

 

I'd have been about four at the time.

I think the JDM Toyota is a Corona T170/171, which seems to be a version of what we got as Carina in the late 80's/early 90's (last Japanese-built model before Carina E came out here).This took quite a bit of working out, because at the same time you could also buy a Carina (which doesn't look like what we got as Carina, though it is), a Carina ED and a Corona EXiV.One model I stumbled across while sussing out the above and which intrigues me is the Celica Camry from 1980-82 - it is neither Celica, nor Camry, but a reworked Carina

Alfashite, sorry for the street furniture in the way but an approaching traffic warden was a discouragement from standing in the street to get a better pic!

Wow. I'd give my right bollock for that Dutch-plate Estourer. Pity they never come up in that condition over here... I think I'd have to remove that towbar though... Good selection there - particularly like the S-Cargo and the Viewt, they're so tacky they almost go full circle and become cool again... Nver did understand why they made the Dolly Sprint with an autobox - it goes completely against the character of the car, and the Borg Warner box is a dreadful unit - a decent manual 1850 would widdle all over an auto Sprint.Like the old commercials as well, especially that normal-control Merc. You still see a few of those working in Eastern Europe and parts of South America. Speaking of commercial shite, I passed a Leyland Terrier horsebox today on the way back from picking up my M*n*. It was the first time I'd seen one of those old 7.5-tonne Leylands in ages - all the horseboxes seem to be TKs, with the odd D series cropping up occasionally.
