oldcars Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I've used Kingpin tyres in the past with good results, they aren't of the same standard as the awful remoulds you got pre-2000s.Are kingpins all remoulds? I have a set on the back of the reliant
UltraWomble Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc8SoPUAtxM Ive used remoulds off and on for years depending on how poor I have been - only ever had one Yugoslavian one that the tread started to peel off.
cms206 Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Ran Kingpins on my 940 Turbo with no issues either, wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. brickwall 1

oldcars Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I may die. At a guess remoulds on a three wheeler are prob not the best idea.
gordonbennet Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Would have thought a light vehicle creating little or no tyre heat would be a prime candidate to take advantage of remoulds, its excess heat that causes the treads to peel off. oldcars and brickwall 2
sierraman Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I looked at price for 2 x remoulded at local tyre place, £54 for remoulded tyres and £110 for mid range. If I was desperate I would over part worns but if I could at all afford it I'd get the mid range ones.
Lacquer Peel Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I may die. At a guess remoulds on a three wheeler are prob not the best idea. They're fine, a lot better than most of the cheap, grip-free tyres made in China. oldcars 1
jonathan_dyane Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 +1 on the Kingpin remoulds. I'm happy with mine and about to buy more. For me they beat both part-worns and budget tyres.
DaveDorson Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Remoulds are fine once the release agent has worn off A lot of the time, delaminated tyres happen because of heat and it's very rare, regardless of what Internet folklore might tell you. The heat is often due to low pressure or something else being to cock. I've run loads on various stuff, and they've always been OK Even some of the China no grip stuff isn't as awful as some would say, it's pretty hard to buy a terrible tyre these days.
oldcars Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Thanks, glad i will not die. They will need replaced soon anyway as they are wearing down.
Jazoli Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I can't understand this whole remould/cheap tyres thing, I am as tight as a nuns chuff but will buy decent tyres for my cars, they are the only contact point (s) you have with the road, you might think you don't need the extra grip decent tyres offer but when you have to stop quickly or perform an emergency lane change/swerve you want as much grip as you can possibly get. I have had plenty of experience of cheap tyres, it seems every (cheap) car I buy is fitted with some unbranded or Chinese no name rubbish, the first thing I do when I can afford to is get a decent branded set put on if I've decided to keep the car, the Conti's I've just put on the Focus were £60 a corner, they'll cost 0.2p per mile over the average 30k life of a tyre, that's cheap in my book for peace of mind. Even some of the China no grip stuff isn't as awful as some would say, it's pretty hard to buy a terrible tyre these days. Then try a set of Landsails, I bought a set of alloys for my car, they came with almost new Landsails, they had significantly less grip than the Michelin's with 1.6mm of tread left wet and dry which were on the steel wheels, there is plenty of utter shite tyres out there.

I'm a bit the same with tyres, but can't justify spending £60+ a corner on top quality winter tyres when they're used as they are. But I wouldn't buy cheapo new winter tyres, I've tried them and at least one aspect of them is totally crap. It was a tipoff about these retreads a few years ago which led me to try a pair - they use Conti/Mich carcasses and work very well. The wear rate is probably a third faster than an Alpin but this isn't so much of a factor for me - but good grip and not ruining steering characteristics is. Jazoli 1
