Lacquer Peel Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 I've owned a couple of Mk3 Golfs and they're just a bit dour and unlikeable, rust prone, and badly made from shit parts. Apart from that, great. Cavcraft and Sigmund Fraud 2
skattrd Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 I've owned mk1 to mk4 Golfs, Sciroccos and Jettas, I wouldn't have another mk3, but I'd have most of the others.I currently own a Bora (mk4 Golf based) and mk2 Scirocco (mk1 Golf based) so I am not anti VW. Mk3's are heavy, have no feeling to the handling, rust worse than any others and have no redeeming features I am aware of. 500tops and Cavcraft 2
Pillock Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 Price. GTI for £300, and they're not terrible. They're not as fun as they should be, but they're cheaper than both the earlier and later models. And there's a bazillion of them in breakers. I got a pair of immaculate front seats for mine for a tenner, the entire plastic trim for one side for a fiver, set of alloys for £20. Parts market has reached saturation. Engine £200, gearbox £50.
Cavcraft Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 Rusty, badly made, singulary THE worse seats you'll ever perch upon (and slide off on corners) and just utterly miserable. And I'm the man who defends Mk3 Astras. 500tops 1
500tops Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 Certainly one of the very worst cars of that era... In The Pit 1
Matt Posted December 27, 2014 Author Posted December 27, 2014 Mk3's are heavy, have no feeling to the handling, rust worse than any others and have no redeeming features I am aware of. That sounds an awful lot like a chubby Swift to be honest; Swift has nil communication through the steering, some of the ones I've seen are really quite rusty and the only things I like about them are the fuel economy and the rear lights. Rusty, badly made, singulary THE worse seats you'll ever perch upon (and slide off on corners) and just utterly miserable. And I'm the man who defends Mk3 Astras. I would be buying one with as little rust as I could and bolt on panels would be repaired, the Swift is no Rolls Royce either (pretty far from it) and so long as the seats don't hurt my back after 50 miles then they are already doing better than what I have. It doesn't sound like I would be losing much by switching to a MK3 Golf by those descriptions! I don't care for having something that handles like it's on rails/like a go-kart as 99.9% of my driving is commuting due to me being stingy and not wanting to use more fuel than necessary, like I've said the bodywork would get overhauled anyway so rust can be fixed and the build quality only needs to rival a Suzuki Swift, even on a bad day I'm sure the Germans can muster up the ability to do that.
Matt Posted December 27, 2014 Author Posted December 27, 2014 So, what time are you collecting it? 4:27pm. I think the only way to find out is to actually get one myself and live with it for a bit and see if they are as terrible as one half of the internet says they are (plenty of people defending them too) because from the seat of a Swift it's hard to see how I could take a step backwards in doing so.
Cavcraft Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 From the seat of my computer desk it's hard to see how you could take a forwards step in doing so!
500tops Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 10 mins down the road - I'll happily take a lookhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Daihatsu-Cuore-0-85-Cuore-/121452653221?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item1c47246aa5 Cavcraft 1
fordperv Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Seen a few with that steering wheel it's a bit much really, especially when it's teamed with four different coloured wheels and four different coloured seats.Don't forget the driver in a timmy mallett shirt with a pineapple hat Cavcraft 1
PiperCub Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 My old man had a Mk3 in the late 90's, he bought it on the strength of my Mk1 Golfs I'd owned and had good service from. He never liked it, neither did I, dull, stodgy, poorly made and frankly unreliable for such a new car (about a year old when he got it) - seemed to be one thing after another. I'm sure they've got their fans but I honestly don't know why. The Harliquin? A bloke who lived along the road from my folks at the time had a Polo version. My dad summed it up for me when he said'Oh my god, looks like someone wrecked the bodywork and got any old replacements from a breakers yard - he must be saving up for a respray now' Someone posed the question of where did they all go - I recall an aquaintence telling me they were so hard to sell (see dad's comment - suspect he wasn't the only one to say this) that a fair few were resprayed in single colour. He had worked for VW in the past & wasn't prone to BS but I can't confirm if this was true or just an urban legend.
Lacquer Peel Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Does it have to be a five door? This 1.8 auto cabriolet doesn't look totally unappealing for £600, relatively local to me if you want a full* warranted* LACQUERPEEL™ vehicle check.http://www.gumtree.com/p/volkswagen/volkswagen-golf-cabriolet/1091901561 Alan_Green, Cavcraft and Sigmund Fraud 3
Alan_Green Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 If you are going to "make" a Harlequin surely you should avoid Polos and MK3's as they have already been mass produced? (Edit - Wikipedia says only 264 Golfs were made. Seemed like loads more to me). For the record I though the Polo was quite jolly. Didn't think the MK3 Golf worked nearly as well. Something boxy like a Volvo or Lada would look great.
