I had a mate at school who went on to be a copper. I believe he is a Sgt now.

 

He turned into a complete bellend after returning to his former print works and berating all of his ex-colleagues for just being printers. He never had a dog as far as I can recall. 

 

As a balance, I have met a lot of cops in my AMHP role who have been absolute diamonds.

Technically anyone can arrest someone if they see them committing an indictable offence (PCSO's included) although it's obviously not advisable if you don't have a thorough understanding of all laws applicable to the situation and most importantly what constitutes reasonable force to keep someone under arrest/detainment; if you see someone lamp someone else you can't just launch your weight at them so they hit the floor and tell them they are under arrest, you'll get charged with assault too. I did a door supervision training course a while back in which we were taught the difference between detainment, arrest and when it is suitable to use both as well as how to forcibly eject a 'customer' and how to defend yourself against them when they fight back.

I once got threatened with assault, when about 3am one Saturday morning I assisted a lad whose pissed up mate was kicking off on him trying to get him to fight then when the lad wouldn't fight, the pissed up lad went into my elderly neighbours and started throwing her wheelie bins at her house, i asked the more sober lad if he needed help his reply was, yes please he's really going to hurt someone, i popped down I asked the pissed lad to stop, he took a few swings at me so I used control and restraint to assist him to the floor and held him there, told his mate to ring the police, a right arse nobbler of an officer turned up and tried to dress me down, threatening me with assault charges after he got the cuffs on the pissed lad without a fight, telling me that it's assault detaining the lad and all this nonsense, i stopped him mid sentence and told him I used correct restraint methods which I am certified in due to my job and I would happily fetch the relevant documents for him, for some reason his attitude changed and he thanked me. so I said goodnight and went to bed.
