However, it doesn't start.

Pretty standard occurrence, following any significant work to a car. Usually leads to pretty extensive dismantling, followed by confirmation that everything is in the correct place. Which is then followed by reassembly and a further trial, during which the car fails to start again.

You must disassemble/check/reassemble at least 3-4 times, before you can realise that the car doesn't start due to some minor, unrelated issue, e.g. because you've fogotten to attach one of the coil LT leads.

Ask me how I know...

There is a spark, or rather three of them, but the distributor needed setting one tooth further towards cylinder 1.

The car wants to run, however, no fuel pumpage is forthcoming.

When I pour petrol down the throat, it runs for a few seconds with no untoward noises.

I tried to prime the fuel pump and there is petrol at the pump, but it's not pumping anything through to the carb.

Is there a fuel pump priming procedure?

try hooking up a gravity fuel supply to the carb, then the engine will run long enough for the pump to suck up some fuel,

-  you should see it spitting it out all over the engine, when it does.  then light up a BIG cigar in extasy, and mind your eyebrows.

the only coolant leak I ever had was top hose to rad, and that was not the hose clip joint, but the brazed pipe to rad joint, cured with some poxy E compound.

so sorry you are having grief, but once you get it running, power open that sliding electric roof, tune in to the Archers, along with

the thrum of that offbeat 3 cyl production, you VILL B SMITTEN !  mein heir

Actually, there is a little pushrod that actuates the fuel pump.

Fuel pumpage much improved after little pushrod installage.

I have a cheap bike pump converted from blow to suck for fuel primage solutions.

Take pump apart, turn around flexible valve thingy, pin in place, put pump back together.

Dead Beedies are in the ashtray, if that helps.

Anyway, it runs, and it runs actually quite nicely.

Things left to do are connecting the exhaust, retorque the head, adjust the tappets and mount heat shields and grille.

And then, it's Cannock or burst bust.

Some zorst connectage, head retorquage, and tappet adjustage was had today.

It's now running exceedingly as it should.

One tiny water leak needed epoxyage.

It was found out today, that the thermostat is stuck closed, which could be the cause of all this.

A new thermostat should arrive tomorrow lunchtime and upon installage, WCPGW on the epic trip to Cannock?

A mega thanks goes to Mr Conelrad, whose invaluable help over the past few days is utmost appreciated.

Well, after making it to Cannock and back without any drama, a few niggly bits were left to do.

As of today, they are fixed and I pronounce the car being back to health.

Congrats. That must feel pretty satisfying!

The rattle is fixed?

That would be correct, sir. Now others became audible, though.

Sounds like life with a Deux Chevaux...  :)

Well, one of the rattles has been identified as the ashtray mounting bracket, which is in the passenger glovebox.

Don't ask.
