DodgyBastard Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Having recently brought my number of cars up to six I really shouldn't be thinking about getting another but have found an early Proton in A scrapyard for £200. I currently own a later 1.3 mpi Proton which I use daily, it's actually one of the best cars I've owned, utterly reliable, good mpg, cheaper tax bracket etc.Does anyone on the forum have any experience of the earlier carbed 1.5 auto version? I'm 90% sure I'll probably just buy it anyway but would like some opinions of why I shouldn't buy it... Proton 1.5 giffermatic by srblythe, on Flickr Also if I do end up with it, I'll likely be selling on one of my cars but can't really decide which one... Typical hoarder mentality... Skizzer Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 would like some opinions of why I shouldn't buy it You do realise you're on entirely the wrong forum for that, don't you? Looking forward to the collection thread.
320touring Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 I misread the title and came in with high hopes of a fibregash monstrosity.. Alas, nae proton dimma:(
Taff Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 I always thought the Daihatsu produced the Dilemma
DodgyBastard Posted November 5, 2014 Author Posted November 5, 2014 Is it a saloon? I don't like hatchbacks. Yeah it's a saloon!
cms206 Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Yeah it's a saloon!Should never have sold mine... the 1.5 isn't a bad mill, IIRC about 85bhp in 12v carb guise and 1468cc so still cheap tax. 3spd auto should be grim. What trim is it, looks like a GLS?
DodgyBastard Posted November 5, 2014 Author Posted November 5, 2014 My main dilemma is what I sell/get rid of in order to get the Proton... The choices are: This: DSC_3873 by srblythe, on Flickr This: DSC_3050 by srblythe, on Flickr Or this: DSC_2838 by srblythe, on Flickr The Beta, I just got. It doesn't run and needs a shitload of welding, The Volvo I've had for a while, it's in quite good condition and drives well enough. The Carlton is really nice to drive but the heater blower doesn't work making it useless to drive in the cold, demisting the screen is non existent... Hmm, Decisions..
Anglevan Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 I own a 1986 lancer 1.5 auto. Bought off eBay for just over £200 4 years ago ? Been a fantastic car, can be heavy on juice if pushed and the 3 speed auto restricts it somewhat but otherwise it's great. In the time I've had it I've done the cambelt, front brake pads and recently had to replace the rear exhaust otherwise just oil changes.
Matt Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 The Carlton is really nice to drive but the heater blower doesn't work making it useless to drive in the cold, demisting the screen is non existent... Hmm, Decisions.. It's early November, winter is well on it's way so If you don't plan on fixing it very soon I don't think that you can deny that it's going to fall into disuse very soon in which case it's pointless. Ditch the Voxhall.
alf892 Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Dump the Volvo on the basis it is the least nice? Condition and practicality excepted obvs....
red5 Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Well, i'd buy it. But then i would. Watch carb. rest is bullet proof as far as running gear can be.
nisfan Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 £200 buys a working blower motor, or a spray job but not enough metal, gas and wire to weld that beta.

I find it a lovely thing to drive, very relaxing. Not fast, but it shifts if you really floor it. Economy quite acceptable too, last two tankfuls have returned 30 and 34 mpg on mixed town and motorway use. DodgyBastard 1
