Citroen XM - was JohnK's steed

I'm tempted to punt my W reg 2.1 Auto XM on if there's enough interest. Lovely condition but needs a head gasket. I just don't know when I'm going to have time to do it. It'll be cheap and only has 96k on the clock!

I did the head gasket on my 2 litre auto a few years ago & it wasn't too bad to do. Mine's a petrol so might be easier than a diesel one. I replaced the coil pack & some other bits while I was about it.

Right. This one's also for sale then. I've had a very enjoyable 16 months with the XM, but simple economics dictate that either this or the Prelude needs to go ASAP.

In short, 11 months MOT, cambelt last year, front brake overhaul very recently, very solid, bit scruffy, 45mpg, £895.

Whilst this is sad news, I am looking down the back of the sofa for pennies*.

*but have only found soft bits of crisps so far

You won't think this is a serious suggestion, but actually it is

;)

Swap for Renner Vel Shatis?

2.0T Privilege in v pale green with beige leather

Scruffy outside, lovely inside. Stupidly high mileage, but no sign of giving up for a long time yet. Mot till June. Great at long distance cruising. Had oil and gearbox oil changes in last three months, new tyres all round, bust rear engine mount replaced, no knocking from the back end, but both front windows move incrementally. Inner fuel filler flap shuts only with coaxing. One rear tyre pressure sensor missing, other rear not reporting. Screen wash sensor intermittent.

It's not that I'm itching to get rid, but the chance of a sorted Xm is tough to resist!

Long shot, I know.

Glwts! (unless I find a buyer for the Renner sharpish, in which case you'll have a taker...)

That was a fun day Mr Dugong. Seems ages ago! Probably because it is. By my standards of car ownership.

It was October 2014, lad. A lot has happened since then.

Aye. I'd owned the XM for all of about a week. I think that might be the last time I trimmed my beard too looking at it...

This one has had a few sniffs around it, but no bites yet. Still has half a tank of fuel! That'll ruin any chances of a fuel station stop on the way home, even if you live in France.

Having removed the XM from sale, I realised it hadn't had a service for 10,500 miles. GUILT. 10,000 mile interval.

So, cracked on today. Nice day for it.

Typically, I got oil all over the sodding place. How do you remove an oil filter that's tilted downwards without gushing oil all over the bloody place? I ahve no idea. Anyway, horrible black oil out, Comma goodness in.

The fuel filter was a fiasco too. Again, I never seem to be able to do this without major spillage. Worse, I'd been sent the wrong sodding filter. This seriously pisses me off, as sorting out a replacement is an utter pain in the arse. Oh well. Finished up, decided against an LHM service (because pipes need undoing that have funny fasteners) and gave it a wash instead.

I always go for a test drive after a service/wash, to check things over and dry the brakes. As I accelerated in second, the clutch began slipping big time. Shit. Obviously some of the diesel had found its way onto it. Got back, sloshed Jizer degreaser over the engine and got the hose out. Steamy.

Still slipping, albeit not as badly as it was. I'm a bloody idiot.

You're not the first to do that and had to drive a few times through a deep ford when thinners sprayed at pressure didn't stop slippage 100%. At least the environment smiled when it found out I was polluting things with lovely used vegoil. Bit of a panic at first, though.

The front end is still clonking in a horrible manner. I'm due another roadtrip next week, so headed over to Sparrow Automotive for a quick check. Firstly, we went greenlaning in order to make the noise happen.

Pete's suspicion was brakes. And he was right. I'd somehow forgotten to refit the pad anti-rattle spring. Idiot. While we were there, Pete said some tyre swapping might not be a bad idea. After two winters of my hooning, the nearside front tyre was in a bad way. I reckon 75% is still good tread, so it's gone on the back now. I managed to correctly swap the other side around when I refitted the winter tyres for this season.

The tyre pressures were low at the front, so I guess that hasn't helped. I know XMs can eat front tyres when the wishbone bushes are tired though. May be something else to add to the list. In other news, wiper blades. I've gone aero.

I don't think they look right, but they do seem to give judder-free performance, which is the bit I care about most at the moment. The Michelins that I had fitted were utterly shit. Never again. These are wiperblades.co.uk's own blades.

I really am a bloody idiot. The clatter from the front end was because I'd not replaced the pad anti-rattle spring.

That's this bit!

12439176_10154087113263200_5717146225401

Then I almost crashed the XM into the Nippa. Rather than jack it up, I'd lowered it onto some blocks of wood for a change. Why not let the hydraulics do the hard work? That was fine, but I hadn't reapplied the parking brake firmly enough. It was almost Shitefest 2015 all over again...

glad to hear something good about wiperblades.co.uk, the ones I got from them scratched my Fusion screen with about 2 wipes  :-(

Oh don't say things like that! I'm getting utter fed up with wiper blades generally.

Its funny watching cars run away from people, they never quite manage to get their other leg into the car. Sone sort of safety escape route I think!

I've been using a set of Denso aero blades on my Accord for almost 3 years now, they are still supple and dont judder or smear, might be worth look at them next time.

Good save with the XM though there was a lack of swearing as you ran to the car.

Just thought it was the quickest way to get my foot on the pedal. It suggests previous experiences perhaps...

It was like watching a Hollywood horror film... You know what is coming but can't help but watch!
