TARP CAT PISS NO TAX NOSY PARKER

Just throwing this out there for opinions/abuse/irrelevant humour

Now we no longer need to display a VED or tax disc how does the law stand, do we think, on a car covered up on the street?

I may use one of the Morrises over the winter and due to putting my camper van in storage I lose a "slot" in the sheltered parking arrangements that I have.   Therefore, said Morris is going to have to live out on a public road and it would be good to keep it covered up on occasion.  I am not looking for cover it/don't cover it advice cos that's a whole other can of worms.   Point is the bastard leaks despite all what I have done for it in that respect and needs to be covered up, end of... Paying for EVEN MOAH dry storage is out of the question, I am already over a ton plus monthly now.

What is likely legal point of view, d'you think?

Get a chunky black felt tip and scribble the random numberplate of your choice on the car cover?

I'd imagine it'd fall foul of the need for reflectors to be visible, and number plates. Sew some replica number plates on the cover and stick on a couple of bicycle reflectors. Sorted.

Or just stick some copy plates of a taxed car that you own on the Morris, the plate will show up as fine and no jobsworth will notice that it doesn't look like a typical Merc 190E

Paint the tarp yellow and (badly) spray/stencil a random phone number onto it. Leave a few bits of plywood on the top and everyone will think it is a skip. Stealth storage.

The question that jumped into my mind was whether sheltered parking is the car-equivalent of sheltered housing - you know, warden-controlled, easy-access bathrooms, no steps, panic buttons everywhere, only open to older folks, that sort of thing?

Sorry to be no help whatsoever

Put it up on milk crates first, then technically it is not on the road at all

I think think it will be taxed and the question is can it be covered on public highway. Can you get/make a cover with see through sections for lights and number plates?

Are all parked cars illegal when it snows and completely covers the car?

I leave a cover over my car (an Astra) sometimes and the front of the cover can go over the top of the bumper, leaving the number plate clearly visible (and the bumper of course, which is brightly coloured so people can at least see it.  Doesn't work for the back where the plate is too high up but if I needed to I'd get a spare plate and 'do something' to make it visible.

Hmmm...thanks chaps it pretty much confirmed what I thought.  Plates copied / stuck on to cover and reflectors.  I have often thought about the snow thing but I guess the argument there is that it can be brushed off.   TBH it probably will end up being more trouble than its worth particularly if I haven't planned it properly and keep wanting to use it.

Can you still get those smaller covers that just cover the windows and roof or would that not help the leak issue anyway?

Thats the funniest thing I have read all week :)

Probably not particularly realistic, but the legal way to do this seems to be to stick it on a trailer if it's kept on the road. That way it's clear that it's not in use even if it's got a cover on it and you've got it 'off' the road. I think if it's untaxed then you're not really supposed to be storing on the roadside.

Ahh, but if it's disguised as a skip it'll need permission from t'cooncil to be on the road and should have a road cone at each end.

^True!  Also, I am sure one of my neighbours would either slit the tarp to lob in a mattress or ferret for something saleable... Also, cos I IZ LEGUL this isn't about hiding an untaxed car, just protecting one that will be in regular use.   Perhaps a half cover would suit - most of the leakage is around window rubbers and the number plates would still be showing.   I know I should just fix the rubbers but they've been done once (obviously not properly) and they are going to have to wait until funds come round to that part of a very long list again!

Just get a big caravan, chop the bottom out of it and drop it over your car to hide it.

Or paint it up like a police car which will not only provide reassurance to your neighbours that Plod is present, it will reduce your insurance costs as crime plummets on your street. Win!

As police cars now have a "catchy" slogan on the side (such as reducing crime in your community), you could say "all Vauxhalls are shit" or "hammer a smaller tarp over it".

Or put one of those BT tents over it so the locals assume your Broadband connection must be really fucking difficult to wire in
