Amphibious shite

I can confirm that the DUKWs are back in service on the Thames after being withdrawn for a time after the fire pictured below. Personally, I wouldn't fancy sailing in one. I work in Westminster and often watch them on the river while I'm sat eating my sandwiches at lunchtime. They really struggle when they're going against the tide, sometimes barely making progress at walking speed. I've seen them turn back downstream without making it as far as their usual landing spot at Vauxhall on more than one occasion. They hug the bank where I assume the rip isn't as strong as it is midstream. I definitely wouldn't relish having to abandon ship in the middle of the Thames!

Yes they can be quite exciting days out

Edited to add DW types a lot quicker than me!

For style and panache, you can't beat the Cubans.

Shame to see what happened to those DUKWs, they were good fun. I heard the Liverpool one wasn't their fault but one of those Red Bull race thingys had left a buoy under the water and the DUKW hit it. Windsor still had one earlier this year and they were apparently going to replace it with an electric version. Electricity and water, now there's an interesting combination.

From more recent times, how about the Gibbs Aquada? I always thought it looked like a pregnant MX-5.

I did my university placement at Gibbs while the Aquada was going through the final stages of development. MX5 headlamps and windscreen, the rest of it was completely bespoke and unbelievably well engineered. Like NASA quality workmanship under the skin.

Waterjet at the back. Powertrain is Freelander V6 so the 4x4 can be split between the rear wheels and the jet. And KV6 for a lovely noise, total futureamphishite win and perennial reliability*.

Full planing hull and 30kt capability.

I think designed for crossing marshland/ditches rather than out and out amphibious duties.

And if you have a floating car, you need a floating caravan
