Spanish plated car leaving UK

Recommended Posts

Hi there. Some months ago I wrote about my Spanish plated car which i drove over from Spain 8 months ago (ie more than the 183 day maximum). In August I'll be driving it back indefinitely and was wondering if I might get caught at the customs for a car that's been here too long. I know when you buy ferry tickets you have to give them your car's registration, and i'd have thought it'd be easy for their computer system to track how long the car has been over here...

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

You may get picked up by BNPR (it's like ANPR but more racist) and get 'done' for it, but considering some cars round here have been running on Polish plates for a decent length of time, I'll be surprised if they lifted you for it.

I'd imagine the reg number on the tickets is to monitor UK registered cars leaving when there's police interest, I think you're worrying too much.

What you're imagining is that the Ferry company will dob you in to the DVLA, who will go to the UK police, who will liaise with the Spanish police to find out who owns the car, to work out that it was the same person bringing it in and taking it out, and then have the Spanish authorities extradite you to the UK to pay a fine.

Given that the UK police can't spare the time to patrol most small towns, and have closed most cop shops, I'm going to go out on a limb and say you'll be fine :)

Nowt will happen. Don't worry about it!!!

^^

This.

The ferry company is a private business, and doesn't give a fiddler's fart about where, or whether your car is registered at all.

They won't release any data to anybody, because that would be a crime under the data protection act.

And the rozzers that see you will look away, because they generally don't touch cars with furrin plates travelling southbound.

Once you arrive at the border control at the ferry, the Brits won't care, since you travel out of the country, and the Frenchies

don't give a flying monkey about you having a Spanish reg.

Borrow* some age appropriate UK plates and book the ferry under those?

But, sonny, you can rock up at the ferret terminal dans Dover* and buy your ticket there so no-one knows you and your Spanish** wheels are leaving till you have left.

*Unfortunately you will end up in France where they will bugger you senseless with une fromage dong

** If stopped randomly by a Brittish Bobby proffer an Arabic driving licence and engage in witty banter " Oh gran majestad que tiene el aliento de una hiena y el pene de un hurón sifilítica"

The reg number on the ferry booking is just to speed up your transit through check-in. They have ANPR cameras at the check in booths, but they are just to link your reg number to your ticket so they have the details on the screen before you have wound your window down. A quick look at your passport to see you are who you should be according to the ticket and through you go. Zero fucks given about vehicle status or registration issues.

They do the same thing at Gatwick long term parking. Book ticket with reg number and the barrier just lets you in and out.
