Fiesta sill welding

The end of the sills on our fezzy have started to go, garage has said can weld cover sill on over top. It has about 4 other patches along sill that have been welded up, do you think it's worth getting the entire sill done just so it's done and won't need attention every MOT?

What's the cost? Any pics of the area? Will covering it see out the cars life?

I always cut rot out, but only if the it's worth while.

Your mot station will offering to wang a patch on it to get it throught it's mot. If you go to the effort of putting sills on it you'll probably find rot in the inner arch and inner sills.

Just account for this in your budget if you decide to do it. If you want to keep the car then it's worth doing .

From previous repairs to the sill, it's starting to go a bit frilly at the base of the old sill, I imagined it would be welded over the top. Quoted 2 hour labour plus cost of skin sill to do job so...

Why weld it over the top? If they're going to that extreme it's only another 20 minutes per side to cut out the old sill and fit the new one instead of the rusty one.

You don't want to weld it over the top as you'll get trapped moisture, which rot it out from the inside. Get it all cut out, weld in new stuff.

If you get a skin sill welded over the top, you'll get 12 months ticket and just maybe a further 12, then that will be it as it will be utterly rotten inside & out.

Get him to cut the old ones off and weld a full one on.

To save money tell him you will beautify it when you get home.

It's a nice day to weld again.
It's a nice day for a right welding.

If I got another 2 years MOT passing, I'd be chuffed. At the end of the day I'm making the decision whether to replace it with something not rotten for probably £5-600 or stuff £200 at it to make it structurally sound again.

A tub of wob and a tin of tar.

Would welding patches over rust actually make it 'structurally sound' or just get it through the MOT? Your call.

The latter rather than the former. However, if the full sill is available surely the time and cost involved with doing a proper (safe) job is hardly significant.
