The following series is from the construction of the "Ruhrschnellweg" (i.e. the B1, later A40) through Essen

The problem:

Permacongestion (here at Kronprinzenstraße) on the B1 through Essen in the early 50s, not being helped by saloon and army lorries of much Englishness

i02603_Kronprinzenstrasse_speziell_0900_

The solution:

Build a dual carriageway straight through the city centre. The first section was started in the 50s and the last contract lot, the tunnel, was finished in 1970.

Back then, all you needed for such a project, was a plan, construction equipment and lots and lots of concrete. Money was there in abundance anyway.

There were no tree huggers, preservationists, gentrification opponents, or other such spoilsports, because everything was better back then.

So to start with, they built this temporary steel flyover, designed and built by Krupp, because they couldn't close the road

Even Bundespräsident Heinemann (centre left with dark suit, glasses and white hair) showed up for the occasion

Note rails for tram separating the carriageways. The big Koch and Sterzel building was a factory for x-ray equipment

Opening ceremonies of the tunnel included a Gogo-Girls show - I'm surprised they are dressed, considering this is 1970

Firstly apologies for polluting the black and white thread with colour (uploaded wrong image) but yes its for real.   In 1980 the Sunshine Skyway Bridge across Tampa Bay was wrecked by a freighter.  35 people died but the chap in the ironically named Skylark was lucky.

Sadly I knew straight away who those three are, and only one of them was English.

I can't work out what's happening there!

Yes, it looks really od because of that massive girder that appears to be sticking out of the ship.  Opposite angle shows it to be part of the bridge that should eb holding the roadway up.
