Sunday Spannering

I am planning a general fixing the Datsun session on Sunday 1st June and am offering to make this an open session for shiters to meet, greet and help each other with any car niggles.

The location is at my house in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

The session to run from about 2pm to 6pm with people turning up / leaving as and when they want, there is a good pub with big carpark at the end of the road if that helps.

I have enough space for two cars to be worked on in the front garden and will provide unlimited tea, coffee and cake plus access to any tools, ramps, axle stands I have.

There is a large Halfords about 10 mins away for finding that they don't have exactly what you need on a Sunday afternoon but will have some gunk to bodge it with.

So if you want an extra pair of hands for that niggly job, a second opinion of the cause of that strange burning smell or just want to laugh at me trying to find the loose wire in a 40 year old 260Z then show your interest below and I will PM you the exact location of the meet.

I'll say that the current list of 'issues' is

Carbs running rich

Left indicators sticking on and not flashing

Engine running cool

Hole in the exhaust manifold gasket

Rear lights not working, connected to dash lights not working

A couple of indicator bulbs not working

Rear demist not working

Is that an aftermarket aircon unit in the passengers footwell? If not what is the extra switch on the dash for?

Any progress in any area will make me fell better about the Beast as I have barely touched it this year.

If the session works them maybe we can make it a semi-regular midlands event for car maintenance with a roving location.

P.S. I have a load of bike tools and a decent bike stand as well, so if you want to mess about with your pedal powered shite then bring it along.

Arrgghh! I wHish I could get to this, my Sterling would have had some proper spannering work to be done if I were back in UK. DAMN!

Hope you all have a good day anyway!

What a brilliant idea. I shall bring the 205 and an aerial.

That is a brilliant idea. If I wasn't away all week working at the moment I'd come along just to try and learn stuff.

If it works and funds willing, I don't see that it can't be repeated around the country to serve as many shiters as possible/who needs help. The Autoshite fix it meets.... Coming to a driveway near you....

I've replaced one seat in the 205 single-handed. Not going to try that again...

See you on Sunday.

With a boot full of seats?

I may be acquiring a new car Friday which will probably require some fettling so I would be up for attending this. In Brum City Centre so fairly local too which is handy lol.

What an excellent idea! Hope the neighbours still speak to you afterwards though.... The shock of dozens or even hundreds of 'wo/men in threadbare woolly hats' piloting threadbare woolly vehicles chugging up, leaking oil and belching fumes may limit your neighbourly relationships a tad possibly. Unless, like a potentially smelly and noisy barbecue you have invited all the neighbours as well! Lol!

Looks like there will be 4 of us for the first Sunday Spannering. Which is enough that my wife make bake a proper cake (she likes baking).

I will be joined by FPB7, Chaseracer and Heidel_Kakao and we will be playing with a 260Z, a 205, possibly a BX and possibly a mystery car.

If anybody else wishes to join the fun then add yourselves to the thread and I will PM you the address, but you may have to be patient for the PM as I will be out tomorrow and most of Friday.

I hope Julian PMs his address soon, or I shall have to cruise round Edgbaston tomorrow morning looking well shady, listening for the roar of a Prince straight-6...  ;)

Just follow the sound of hammering of smaller sockets.

I sent you the address 5 days ago, the PM is listed on my end as not read yet.

Do we have a system PM fail to proceed?

How bizarre - it is there now, but was not before...

See you tomorrow!

The first Sunday Spannering saw the arrival of an ex-Dollywobbler BX, a 205 with fancy leather seats and a Volvo that wasn't from Scotland.

The fix it issue with the Datsun was on getting the parking and rear lights to work.

This meant taking everything apart and not fixing the problem but working out which wire was the problem

Then putting it back together and hey presto, problem gone, all now working!!

As well as talking about cars and sort of fixing cars we had tea and flapjack (flapjack already eaten, tea already drunk)

Thanks to Andy, Dave and James, hope to see you all again soon.

Right. Name a date and a place and let's arrange it! I'm up for it.

Good laugh today. Basically four blokes talking shite in someone's front garden with tea and accidental fixing of things along the way.

Thanks to Sloth for being the gracious host as ever and to mrs Sloth for providing wonderful syrupy flapjacks!

The 35-second sorting of the BX's non-folding rear seat by applying a good coat of looking-at then twiddling the release handle in a non-approved manner was especially Autoshite.

It's been doing that for ages,  I was vaguely looking for a replacement seat but it's a really rare interior in that one so all parts are made of unobtainium.

Glad you all had fun,  I'm well up for joining in with this at some point but am working on building up the away from the kids points tally after shitefest ;)

It's going to be worth driving over to Brum just to perv over that 260z 8)

I think the idea is along the lines of changing venues/peoples drives/car parks instead of routinely upsetting one set of neighbours so the next could easily be Ludlow based or anywhere else for that matter! Think of it as a travelling shite circus if you will.

I could potentially host one next year when my SUPERSHED has been rebuilt, if people don't mind schlepping to the far end of the M4.  Mrs Skizzer makes good cakes, to help with nutrition/motivation.

Until then I'd be a fairly crap choice of host as my driveway and the street outside are already completely chocker with my own broken cars.

Posted

And for that reason alone, it will no doubt join the SVM at some point!

If you guys want to head out into the countryside I've got the keys to 3 carparks and a field,  just need to convince the boss to let me have another tech weekend.

The last one had all 3 DW BX estate's in attendance

Permission loosely granted so long as we don't drop oil about the place,  Ms C might even make cake :)

Ahem. I've owned four BX estates. Certainly all non-turbo BX estates that I've ever owned were at that very enjoyable tech session! Another one would be great.

Ludlow's fairly handy for most, and far enough for the south/east Shiters to complain about. :P

What do we reckon, start of July in Ludlow then? BX will be in attendance.
