I reckon as a period accessory they're definitely in good taste. I remember the old feller had one on his CX2400 - same age as that 17 actually - and I thought it looked the bizz :)

I'm going to import a set from Australia at some point for the Galant, over there they sell them for new cars!

I remember seeing these on the back of a John Player Special Capri that was owned by a bloke up my street when I was little. I love them , but heard that they are now very rare. I recon with the rising popularity of 70's cars now, they would sell well if re-manufactured 8)

the Capri Club has just started to remake them, obviously only for capris though. Ive got one on my mk4 cortina, it was a bugger to find.. eventually came up on ebay.. and i imagine the chances of finding one for a renault 17 would be even slimmer still. company that made them was autoplas, who are still going but i doubt they do louvers!

Having one on a CX must lose the effect of that lovely concave rear window, surely?....I can't ever recall seeing one on a CX, but I'm pretty sure I'd prefer it without! Horses for courses though.... :? On most cars though, I liked them....Good luck Renomad, in finding somebody who's got a R15/17 one sitting about!

F*ck me vicar! Dave your Cortina is spanking mate, can't believe I hadn't noticed that before. How many 'S' models left do you know? I really should go and check if one I saw abandoned about 8 years ago is still at it's hidey hole.*Sorry for going o/t.

Cheers :D Not many left... about a dozen 2.0S's according to DVLA in 2004 and only one 2.3S.. There was a second very straight 2.3 until last year which the owner got bored with and weighed in!!!Theres a fairly rough 2.0S on ebay just now that the seller is threatening to break because no one will give him strong £ for it.

WOT A TIT. Do people really think 'bid early or I will crush it' type messages are going to work?Gutted there's only one known 2.3 S left, always loved the Cortina (in all models) and always wanted an 'S'. Did they all have the stripey interior as I remember them?F*ck it, I'm going to fire the Chevette up later and go for a drive and see if that Cortina is till there.

Yeah they do. I have a spare stripey interior in my loft! so you could build an S out of an L or GL with the aid of some satin black for the bumpers and back panel if you wanted one 8)

That was the one that was a feature in PC mag a few years ago, somebody took a fairly rough car & turned it into that! Maybe if you track the issue down, there might be contact details in it for the guy who restored it or at least the companies where he sourced the bits from!

Failing that, eBay.fr ?

I've seen these louvres on CXs, R20, R14, VW Beetles, Range Rovers, plus lots of other things.

EDIT: If you haven't, it might be worth a couple of quid finding out!

What was the point in rear window louvres, apart from looking good on '70s and '80s cars?

That was the point! Oh I dunno, airflow maybe?

supposedly they stop sun damage on your interior, but in reality they just look good.I found out to my cost last week they also stop you seeing PLOD out your back window resulting in the issue of a speeding ticket.

....and a bootlip spoiler? Couldn't you just paint the back panel black?

They probably stop you seeing alot of things - but what the heck! :D

It was the traffic plod and they were knobs. Ticketed for 50 in a 40 at 5.30 am on sunday morning! jobsworth bar stewards.I'm ignoring the fixed penalty ticket in the hope that when they report it to the fiscal he will look at the speed and time of day and throw it out. Its hapened before when I got a ticket like that.

I got one on a Datsun 1200 coupe I bought which turned out to be one for a Mk2 Capri which had been cut down to fit. I offered it up on my R15 and it's almost spot on so it may be worth you looking for a Capri one. Mine had been trimmed at the sides to fit the Datsun but would have worked on the R15 better untrimmed. I might still have it knocking around somewhere. If I have, I'll pop it on my R15 and take a pic.

As i mentioned Capri Club International will flog you a capri one. £89 tho

Wow,that's gorgeous 8) .I had a 2.0S in 1989(red with black vinyl roof)& in my wisdom, took out the interior & replaced it with one from a Ghia  .I don't remember seeing many, even when they were pretty new.I do remember they had one in the last series of The Sweeney fitted with Ghia alloys,I think they were a factory option :)
