Insurance is bizarre

I have recently observed that insurance is getting cheaper - or maybe I am getting older!!  Every time I get tempted with new shite I put a quote into moneysupermarket.  12 months later it thinks you own the car so re-runs the quotes.  For a 5 series BM last year the quote was 300 od quid - now its 160!!!

Now the really weird thing is that I just got quotes on the E30 where my 6 years NCB sits.  Get this - it is cheaper by 2 quid to get a classic policy with guaranteed valuation with no NCB than using it!!  So I am doing that and have the NCB free for a new shite purchase  :-D  The 325 in Devon is gone but there may be a Rover 200 BRM up here that I have always fancied....

Its a third car anyway and limited to 3000 miles but thats perfect

When I bought the 330ci M-sport last year it was near enough the same insurance as on a bog standard 318i which I found bizarre!!

The world of insurance quotes is a mystery to me. Suspect they use random number generators in a similar way to the National Lottery!

Porsche 944 sir? That will be £95 fully comprehensive.

MGF 1.8 sir? Oohh.... That will be £398.

Etc.

When I went to take my Alfa 156 off of my multicar policy they initially wanted to charge me £150 extra. After suggesting to them that such an action was utterly idiotic they agreed and refunded me £30 instead.

It's about statistics.  If they want your business, they'll make them fit.

Cherry - Fully comp for £97.

MicraShed - Fully comp £156

C8 - Fully comp with PSV level liability insurance £460 (wife carries "fare paying" passengers)

I'll never understand the insurance business, they just seem to pluck figures out of the air. I remember one year, with me as an under-25 named driver, it was actually cheaper to insure my Corsa fully comp than TPF&T only with the same insurer! HTF that made sense I have no idea.

I put a quote through for Trigger's Acclaim and a 2.0 OMG VTEC YO Accord. The Accord was £200 cheaper to insure :signs053:

1998 MGF 1.8 valued at 800 quid. Only 2 potential whiplash victims. £265 fully comp. Would get written off for a trolley ding.

Brand new Volvo V40, valued at 25 grand, 5 potential whiplash victims but a bag of wind under the bonnet £168 fully comp.

WTF has happened to classic car insurance?
I used to insure my K reg Saab turbo for about £100, the same as I paid for the Vauxhall Royale, Volvo 244 saloon, and the Amazon before that.

Scouting round a couple of places for a quote so I could get something small and sensible (probably end up being a V8 Jag...) to use on my 'regular' policy with NCB and they're quoting me more on a classic policy as I'm paying for it as an everyday hack. Are Volvo estates a huge risk all of a sudden?
