Kylie the RS1600i - 11/09/14 Off to pastures new

Love the UBM dealer bits. Who are you using to retrim your wheel? How much is it costing? I have a 4 spoke here that I may fit to mine if I can get a decent trimmer on it that doesn't mix prices up with his lottery numbers.

Hey up, Phil! Didn't expect to see you here. :D

Karisma (Sean) is doing it it. He has a thread on Retro Rides as well as other forums.

Only £75, but his work is top drawer.

Seems reasonable. Any chance of some pics when you get it back?

Yeah, of course.

Cheers.

I find myself coming on here more and more. Great sense of humor on here. I will be selling something the way it's going to buy something shite.

Nice 1600i :-D

The V-Belts for models built before 15/09/1983 are different. The part number is correct - it is the latest superceded one.

The timing belt cover for models built before 15/08/1982 is different. I believe there isn't a lower part available for the early engines and it is not meant to have a gasket/seal. The covers found on models built after 15/02/1982 are 2-piece, the upper cover and gasket on the 1.1 and 1.3 CVH is different to the one on the 1.4 and 1.6 CVH.

I am a new old stock Ford parts specialist - drop me a PM if you need anything for your RS as I might be able to help.

Cheers fordnut. :)

That's interesting info on the V belts! Had me really scratching my head. Can you get me the correct one? Will PM you.

The timing belt info is also interesting. The covers that were on, seemed original, to me, as the gasket/seal was the correct size and one piece. I wonder what all that was about, then?

Adjusting the lifters had me confused, so I enlisted the help of my HGV mechanic uncle.

Now I know what is what, I know what to do in future.

Even Andrew said the design is awkward (shit for adjustment) and I had to 'adjust' the holding spanner with a hammer, to enable both to fit at the same time.

As there is not enough room to turn the engine over with anything other than a swan neck spanner, whilst lying on the ground, this is one of the reasons I thought I couldn't do it on my own.

I now realise I could have bridged the starter exciter and turned it over on the starter.

Never mind.

A few of them were a bit slack, most notably the inlet on no.2, which was a good 0.005 out.
Now they are done, anyway. I will probably fire it up tomorrow.

Here's the state of the CV boots I fitted when I reconditioned the shafts about 1100 miles ago. Cheap shite.

20140326_202920_zps60fe7706.jpg

I bought them, under the impression that they were the specific size that I needed, but they turned out to be universal ones that I cut to fit.

I think the clue to their quality should have been apparent from the 'CV Books' label on the packet... I guess that's what happens when you look for not necessarily the cheapest crap, but you want a good deal.

As you can see, two have holed through and no doubt the others won't be far behind.

So I bought some more from eBay (lol). At least these were tailored items.
They arrived and were tiny. I checked the part number and they are for a 1.1 engined Escort.

20140325_154816_zpscb06467c.jpg

They were only £15 delivered, so very little point in trying to return them.
Luckily, they were Euro Car Parts stock, originally and still had their labels on.

I am sure you can guess what I done.

As I couldn't 'find' my receipt, I couldn't be refunded, even though the salesman knew I had bought them at a ECP branch
Instead, I ordered the correct boots, same make - I am told these are what a lot of manufacturers use and I can believe it - they seem perfect quality, even down to being supplied with new circlips, nuts, correct sized clamps etc.

The discounted price I received, was about £21. So even though the new ones cost me an additional £24 or so, at least I got shot of the others and even benefitted slightly. :)

20140326_203039_zps8bef7c35.jpg

I will hopefully fit them tomorrow night. It was too cold tonight, plus I wanted to watch The Lads Vs Liverpool.

The postman delivered my NOS electronic dipstick and loom plugs, today as well.

20140326_203157_zps6e0562f8.jpg

And instead of paying £20 odd for new washer hose clips that fit in the scuttle panel, after breaking one of mine, last year, I cut the front lip from the scuttle on the Ghia I got other parts from and carefully extracted the 30 year old, cheapo brittle plastic.

Easy does it

(Semi) success

I only needed one. :)

The engine is a lot quieter, now that the lifters are back to spec.

The driveshafts decided to try my patience somewhat, but not with the circlips, as expected.

These things:

20140329_142700_zps6a111f0b.jpg

As I said, the kits are great. However, the steel clamps being pre-cut to size means I need three hands.

20140329_153133_zpsc763ba6d.jpg

Much better than before (shame I fkd one of the small clamps). I removed the old boots by slicing through them with the worlds bluntest scissors. :/

Refitted the shafts and replaced the diff seals (again), as in the past on other cars, I have damaged them when removing the shafts and not realised until I refilled the gearbox and on some stuff, as you know, that can be a pretty big deal.

Refill method this time involved reusing a 1 litre PAS fluid bottle and flexible neck.

20140329_161521_zps919c91fd.jpg

Nothing unremarkable there, but see the next pic for how I filled it, last year.

Yes, that is a gas hose from a BBQ, with a tiny internal bore. No matter though, the 'funnel' was even smaller. IIRC, it was a nozzle from a rough neck mortar gun.

I would have been nice to have a spare bottle/a shop to be open, then. Filling it took about 45 mins.

Last bit of mincing:

20140329_131309_zpsec179e6b.jpg

When I replaced the headlights, I forgot/never noticed that the upper mounting is on a threaded bar.

So I could have just adjusted it properly, instead of packing it out with washers.

I did wonder, because I am sure the car has had a new front panel (as to be expected) at some stage, but the job is very good and the seam sealer in particular is perfect - so I could never understand why it had been put on cockeyed - there's my answer, it hadn't.

I am in need of a fuel pump relay (321906059C) and they are the same as mk1/early 2 Golf GTi and some other stuff, as they all use KE Jetronic.

Discontinued, year ago at Ford. Wherever I look, they are either unavailable, don't have the in-built fuse or in the case of the one below, over £40 plus p&p.

Anyone know a decent Dub place that sell these?

It would be nice for the pump to only prime when needed, instead of constantly, as with the current Vauxhall relay.

You could try Crazy Quiffs (http://www.golfmk1.co.uk). It's probably not in their online shop but if you call them up I'm sure Richard (da man) will be helpful as he's a top chap. It's a real Aladdin's cave for Mk1 Golf stuff.

Hes has them. £41.00, posted. I guess this must be the going rate.

Shame, as GSF had them for just over £30 and apparently Euro Car Parts do them for £25ish.

When I look and ask, GSF ones seem unavailable, now and ECP don't list anything.

Google searching old eBay listings gave the impression that they were £20-£25ish, also.

Cheers for the link.

the lifters cant be as much of a bastard as these newman ones??

set2.jpg

cant be locked off or adjusted in situ so you have to, take them out adjust so loose, put back in set it to desired gap, take back out and lock off then refit and check its correct, as you can imagine very time consuming.

You win, there!

A lot of the chew on with mine, is down to the spanners (eBay purchase), that someone has knocked up, way back when.

They are similar, but not identical, to the Ford ones and that's why they don't fit.

At least like me, you won't need to mess with them very often, once set up? Are you going to reset yours, warm?

I think I might.

Yeah, saw that one, cheers.

It is a bit sketchy having no fuse. I don't have one atm and I don't like it.

I have asked on the Pineapple forum, too. Hopefully one of them might be able to point me in the direction of a cheaper one.

If not, I will have to bite the bullet.

This do you? I use VW Heritage quite a bit for discontinued parts for the van - usually works out cheaper than going direct to VW Classic parts in Germany!

yep thats why i was asking about the design of rs1600i lifters lol, i do any lifters stone cold if you set them warm they will be noisier, i set them when the engine was built it was recommended to adjust every 7 thousand miles, but im thinking of taking the rocker cover off soon to give them a quick check (its not done 4 thousand yet)

Bugger. The other place I sometimes use is Mecatechnic in France, but postage can be an issue but should be OK for a relay. Just checking now to see if I can find it...

Mechatechnic don't seem to want to post to GB, when I have been on that site in the past.

When I select our glorious isle, it comes back with some random Frenglish, which seems to mean 'Your country is not highlighted in bold and at the top of the selection, so we don't like you'.

Although you get parts posted. Do you get the same message?

I did think about just ignoring it and completing the checkout, anyway.

Every time I've done it, it ends up sending a request to purchase rather than being able to purchase outright. So they get back to you within a couple of days with a link to actually buy it and send to the UK. Price seems reasonable too, but a bit strange that the one on VW Heritage went up when you decided to buy!

http://www.mecatechnic.com/vw_classic_parts.asp?search=321906059C&cotationref=C077506

EDIT - they're actually showing they have it in stock so won't have to order from Germany, which can only be a good thing!

Posted

Check out RockAuto.com they have several listed under 1980 VW Rabbit 1.6L. Prices range from $22 up to $35. They do ship to the UK but shipping can be pricey ($17) though. Still works out cheaper I believe than £40

Sorted! It's on it's way*

I dunno why I never made an account with them when I found the site a few months back. Lol.

Good to hear that you recommend them, anyway.

Cheers for the help, mate.

I think I am sorted, now. Have ordered one from Mat's link.

I will bookmark your link, though - it reminds me of the Hakosuka C10 Skylines etc that Rocky Auto do.

Cheers, mate.

Had the same issue getting one for a Porsche 924,which is the same relay.

  • 2 weeks later...

Fuel pump relay arrived and fitted. I don't think it primes, though.

If I remove it, whilst running and allow the engine to stall, it will not restart and I cannot hear the pump priming.

If I refit the old relay (Vauxhall thing that I got from a Corsa C) it fires up. I can then swap the relays over and the car will run and restart on the new relay.

I need to look at it again, but I think it depicts two circuits, on the case. Would one be for priming and the other for running?

One time I think I heard the correct relay prime the pump for a split second, when turning the key, but I have never heard it again.

Any ideas? I do remember reading that some of these relays won't prime the pump, but I assumed that the engine also wouldn't run, until I saw this relay.

Old and new

New brake pads. Going totally against the Autoshite way of life, here. Not only did I purchase them new, but I also replaced the old ones after only 1K miles. z0mg

I renewed them because when I fitted the last set, I did not have the plugs for the wear sensors on the cars loom, so I cut the plugs from the pads, too. Now I have reinstated the plugs and all is well*.

Concourse wheel arches

Now every* one of my warning lights behaves as it should do.

20140402_140850_zps7960b248.jpg

Well, kinda. The coolant level and washer fluid level indicators worked before. Now, thanks to my new dip stick, the oil warning light works properly. The fuel warning light hasn't worked since I replaced the fuel sender with a NOS Ford item.

Shame the pad warning lights still flicker. I tried contact cleaner and talking nicely to her and still no deal - I know they are notoriously shit.

I think I will try a replacement, low mileage ECU thing (the blue electrical box on the inner bulkhead) as that is the brains of the operation.

Failing that, fuck it.

As ever, more parts have landed

The bloke who does these, offers a fantastic service. Correct car details, even issuing stamp, free reprints etc and even provides 3 discs, to start with.

He sent me a 6 month disc, initially and when I enquired as to why/that I would have preferred a 12 monther - don't want people thinking I am tight  - and he sent 3x 12 month discs out and then another 3 arrived, a few days later. :D

Should look pretty cool, imo and I doubt I will get in any/much bother. Especially after November? when the changes take affect.

Got a pair of new door weather strip things (the ones that run along the bottom of the front windows). As you can see, mine are a bit warped. They are also slightly nicked/split in places. No thanks to me for prying them off a couple of times.

20140126_155650_zps0f11226d.jpg

20140410_195229_zps92fcbebe.jpg

I will be painting the mirror bases, then fitting these trims and hopefully, never removing them again.

That said, they were still only £35 posted. Better that £28 per side from Ford, who I am surprised to hear still stock them.

So if they do need replacing again, it could be worse.

My mate, Steve came down and helped me fit some new riv-nut inserts into the B pillars, for the rear quarter window brackets.

Using the ludicrously sized riv-nut/rivet tool that I borrowed from another mate, was a two man job in itself.

$%28KGrHqZHJBIFET-I4t%28lBRKN%28,E!BQ~~6

Also, Sean (Karisma) finished my steering wheel refurb. 8)

He even re-painted the spokes for me.

As you can see, it wasn't that bad (after I blacked it with boot polish - was grey when I bought the car), but having seen pics of his work and read the happy customers comments, it was a no-brainer. I do like a reconditioned steering wheel.

The refurb is top notch. He has replicated the OE stitching and style very well, imo.

I am not normally one to do this, but if you are in the market for interior refurbishments or retrims, drop the lad a message.

You will love his work - and his prices. He is a top bloke.

That hoop looks better than new man.

Worth it's wait in gold.

Very good lol

Yet another reason I can't wait to drive the thing again. I will need to line the Disclock with something soft and furry, now.
