Number Plate Help

Recommended Posts

I seek the collective advice of the fair peoples of Autoshite.

Until I frequented this place, I thought that a number plate was a plate with numbers on it.

Imagine my horror then, on washing my T2 a bit at the weekend, I noticed that not only did it have laminated acrylic plates front & back but only the one at the back was in the correct font.

I then realised that although I've paid enough attention to know I'm wrong, I've not paid enough attention to know exactly how to sort it out or who I should approach to make me some. I need help!

My T2 was built in '79, but not registered until '80 so it's on a V.

What sort of plates should it have?

Pressed aluminium or the riveted on plastic letters?

And can I use that SERCK font?

And what about dealer stickers?

I've no idea who it was supplied by, but it's a 'Devon' conversion and the number plate begins FMM.

Can anyone help?

Font? Type? Dealer? and where to buy the fellows from.

79/80 should really have raised plastic letters, although the laminated plates were available and gaining ground.  Sercks were also available so if you can find them, they would be perfectly correct.  Front one is legally required to be white and the back one yellow (after 1/1/73) so don't fall into the trap of going for silver on black.

Halfords used to do number plates but I'm not sure if they still do.  Do you have an old-fashioned local motor factor?  They should also be able to help, and may even have the old technology to produce a plastic-lettered plate.  Otherwise, check out the small ads in PC, or just google, because there's no shortage of businesses making plates to any spec you need.

Good luck!
