Toyota Corolla E90 1.3 1990

Evening all!

 

So a certain Mr Shepherd suggested to me that I join this forum. So here I am!

 

I'm quite the 80's and 90's car fanatic having owned to date:

 

1989 Suzuki Swift GLX (First car)
1992 Ford Escort 1.3 MK5
1994 Peugeot 306 dTurbo (let's forget that one existed!)
1992 EG3 Honda Civic 1.3
2001 Ford Focus Turbo diesel estate (the newest car I ever owned)
1997 Rover 420sli (HHR shape, NASP T series lump)
1994 Nissan Micra Super S 1.3
1997 Toyota Celica AT200 1.8
1990 Toyota Corolla

 

The Corolla I jumped at the chance to own as it belonged to my late mother. My sister had used and abused it for a few years and as she didn't have much money, sadly a lot of cowboy garages got their hands on it and royally bodged it all up.

 

I got the car in May last year and so far, have had to do the following works:
2 front CV joints
Full rear brake replacement (shoes, springs, adjusters and wheel cylinders)
Cylinder Head gasket replacement as the cowboy garage Steel Sealed it (bodge)
Water pump feed pipe and associated hoses
Carburettor Vaccuum pipes (all of them as I couldn't find the leak!)
Rear arches filler removed, metal welded into place to pass MOT, full repair to take place later this year.
New tailgate as the original was full of rust and filler
New o/s/r light as the original was a goldfish bowl
New front grille (original had dealer fit spotlamps that were smashed, cannot get correct size spots anywhere for it!)
New Anti Roll bar link rods all round
New o/s/f indicator lens as the original smashed when my sister hit a pheasant in Cornwall.
New clutch as that was slipping. Turns out the clutch that came out was 23 years old and had survived 105,000 miles!

It's a lot of work for a 23 year old car, I know, but the sentimental value of the car is too much for me. It's been a reliable little jalopy since all the work was done, even managing a 600 mile roadtrip in October last year with no issues.

Only aftermarket thing on it right now is the alarm/immobiliser I had fitted to it in May, just to make sure that no little toe rag has it away from me.

Welcome to the forum! I hope to see the Corolla in the metal at some point in the foreseeable future (hopefully before the May event in Birmingham). I'm sure that it and The Volvo will get along well, given that they are of a similar age

There's been a few knocking about on fleabay I've noticed over the last few weeks. Worth just keeping an eye out. I've spotted three identical to mine in Bristol too over recent weeks

Yeah, not very exciting, but I always found myself liking the rear styling especially. Love the fact that you can see the road in the engine bay shot! How engine bays should be.

You could have a go in The Volvo, provided that your insurance covers you for driving other peoples' cars. It's quite nice to plod around in ^^

Sadly my new insurance doesn't cover me to drive other cars :c the last policy did but this new cheap policy I guess they lop it off to make it cheap!

Out of interest, what coolant have you been putting in yours? Mine has full Toyota history and had the modern red stuff in, but my old Subaru of the same age had blue, so I was a bit puzzled...

Just standard blue ethylene glycol in mine, nothing special. Seems pretty happy on it and after 3 coolant flushes following the HGF, the rusty coloured water has gone away leaving it nice and clear blue

There's not many left now. According to howmanyleft.co.uk, there's 1,152 of these GL models left and only 266 GTi-16 ones! Getting rarer by the day.

 

Most are condemned due to tin worm of the rear arches, front wings, rear quarters, tailgates and under the rear windows. That's what most of my restoration will focus on this year as my cars rear quarters are rotting on the arch mould, the front of the arches and under the rear windows.

Just standard blue ethylene glycol in mine, nothing special. Seems pretty happy on it and after 3 coolant flushes following the HGF, the rusty coloured water has gone away leaving it nice and clear blue

That's a touch on my E11 SR, only 295 licensed and 16 sorn according to how many!
