Sting in the tail of road tax changes....

Seems that after announcing that we don't need a tax disc in the window from October, theres a bit of a sting in the tail if you buy or sell privately - RFL doesn't transfer to the next owner.

I reckon this could cause all sorts of hassle and earn the government quite a bit of extra income as well. Looks like a proper PITA to me...

Just another money grabbing scheme then causing a nuisance to legal motorists.

So say 28 million cars in the UK, 5% are sold a year for example, everyone loses say £10 of tax in the deal...

Aye, typical government. They come up with a good  idea to reduce bureaucracy and they just complicate it with...er...more bureaucracy.

Double taxation the month of the sale, too. Doubtless you'll not get that (part used) month back -and the new owner will have to pay from 1st.

I foresee all sorts of potential issues with this.

Wonder how you claim it back?

At least this might keep a few people they were laying off in jobs....

Say you buy a car on saturday morning.

The seller has to claim a refund and you have to tax before you drive away.

Does that mean the seller can go online and claim and instant refund? Because I'll bet you can't tax an already taxed car.

If the seller can't claim an instant refund then you have to wait until it gets processed in 1,2,3,10 working days time. At some point during this period the tax will disappear from your vehicle, you'll have no way of knowing and you'll be at the mercy of plod and his anpr camera.

Think you have a 14 day grace to get the car taxed these days don't you:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-rules-when-renewing-your-tax-disc

Since 17 July 2013, when you renew your vehicle tax or when your new car is taxed for the first time, you now have up to 14 days to display the new tax disc on the vehicle. Under the old rules, you had just 5 days to do this.

For renewals, this extended period will only apply when your application to renew your tax disc is made before the previous one expires. If the application is made after the current disc expires, then the vehicle will be treated as untaxed and the 14 day rule will not apply.

So if you get a new car you and the previous seller maybe have 14 days to get your shiz together?

Probably not that easy though is it?

*edit* Hmm thats for renewal and brand new cars?

If they're sensible (ha!) they'd change it so tax is actually between specific dates, not the first of the month necessarily. Add a few days grace if you've bought a new car (as not everyone has a smart-phone to tax it at the point of purchase) and this nightmare scenario goes away. Wonder if that'll actually happen?

I lose shit loads of money by selling cars with tax, so I might actually appreciate the new way!

If its all done on line i can't see any possible reason why you won't be able to start the new tax on a day of your choosing, why would it have to be the 1st? If you can start it any day this system seems OK surely.

Oh yeah, I suppose the only reason they do the 1st of the month is because they don't want to produce discs for every day of the year. Duur to me.

Nice idea. Will see if that's the governments thoughts too.

I think it's just another thing to discourage private sales of cars. I imagine if you buy from a dealer they'll sort it out for you.

A stupid question I know, but how will this work on vehicles that don't pay RFL, like my A35 and Suzuki Alto?

Will I still have ask someone to record it as being free and then the free won't transfer to a buyer if I sell the car?

Can I be fined for not having my free tax if I forget?

If you've just bought the car then the V5 won't be in your name, so how will they know if you have valid insurance or not?

As of last month they don't check insurance when you buy tax ...

This. Paving the way I guess.

This will be bad news for second hand car dealers because I am sure that many of their stock comes in with a tax disc which they cash in but the buyer always has to buy a disc.

Also I noticed that the car dealer can send you down to the post office to buy a disc for the car that you just bought from them, using their insurance details.

I wonder how many people that buy used cars this way actually have insurance when they drive off and how long it takes for them to get it?

I think that this will make it harder to have uninsured vehicles on the road and so could be a good thing.

It's all down to the government's ineptitude with the country's finances. Where do they turn when they need to generate revenue? Us motorists and we roll over and accept it. It's about time we got together and protested en masse. What with VAT at 20%, fuel duty and now this silly RFL rubbish there will soon be a charge for breathing. Grrrrrr........

as far as the RFL goes insurance is a yes/no question anyway, if you show a bit of paper at the PO or do it online. Being uninsured might have got a bit easier. Not good..... Easy to say ANPR will get the scrotes but not all plod cars have it.

As Sir Clive might say...

10 PRINT "Government"=nobs on horses

20 PRINT "Police"=shrub beaters and childcatchers

30 GOSUB "Motorists"=fox

40 IF "tallyho!" THEN GOTO "six points + £££££"

50 EXIT "sanity"

60 GOTO "10"

With the abolition of the road fund licence disc, I am now eagerly* awaiting the re-introduction of "road tax" but lumped on fuel.

The car tax will be just that, a tax on owning a car and payable by all who have one, But it seems ripe for the thieving bastards to now introduce a tax that will "directly benefit the motorist".
