No surprise really, the one I sold back in the spring was much more tatty than that and when for a bit more cash. Had a tow bar too which would be a bonus.

There's a bloke on Retro Rides that put a BMW 325 diesel into a Reliant Scimitar.

If you're

1. Mechanically sharp

2. Have the time

3. Don't mind having an old car where things stop working

then I'd favour something like that Rover with more modern power and economy.  ALL NEW CARZ R SHIT but with lots of miles I'd prefer 45mpg over 25mpg.

But if it's only occasional long trips, do you really need a diesel at all?  Fair play for using it as an excuse for a new car, but as the next person about to receive a punch in the face would say, "do the math"

If you currently do 600 miles a month at 25mpg, that's £150 in fuel

If you'll soon be doing 850 miles a month at the same 25mpg, that's £210 a month in fuel.  Might not be a problem to get a car that only does 25mpg, where the world is your oyster.

If you get a car that does 45mpg, your 850 miles a month only costs £115.  Could be worth it as a saving, but you'll probably only flit it away on trivialities like the gas bill, council tax and a new washing machine.

The thing is I have a DOHC transit which I need to keep. Lots of our travels are done in said tranny as it tows the caravan and carts motos up and down the country, often both at the same time with room for the whole family and associated tat. This costs a mint in fuel though is an necessary evil thanks largely to the muthafunkin LEZ, we grin and bare the running costs for the convenience and our love of the van.

Motorcycles offer the chance of MEGAMPG's though my right hand most often denies a decent return on the fuel in the tank and they don't cart the whole family with ease.

IF, i can get the Mrs to switch from her Leon to a daily derv then this alone would make it worth the while. Also if we can then run down to Devon on the transits last oil change and a gallon of cherry I would be a very happy man.

Lastly, I haven't had a new car in some months.

Mk3 golf tdi?

One of the only vws that haven't all been ruined by scenesters, should be achievable for sub 300 quid, possibly as an estate.

I love bombing round in my 306 na dizzler, have you thought about looking for anything rover based with the L series, as there mega ace engines.

Another vote for the L-series, a la Wuv and "Rover of Doom" I wouldn't mind one myself, but can't justify it at present.

I like my n/a Saxo dizzler. Seems bomb-proof and very frugal. Good fun to bowl along in.

Some might not like the unassisted steering but I don't mind 'cos I R very manly.

This.  Super comfy for running between London and Devon.  Is not running on chip fat a deal breaker?

Saw a SUPER clean 75 in the scrapyard this week - U Pull It in inverkeithing. Sadly it was a petrol,  V reg ( just off a private plate) and literally not a mark on the thing inside or out. The yard were trying to sell it as a runner for £400 rather than bin it.

Was even a nice colour

Incredible that such a clean and capable car just got binned by someone. Shows you how little value they have.

I didnt have much time to look - was just in looking for a spare wheel and the missus was waiting impatiently in the car so I was 5 mins in and out. They had a D reg Daimler (!) Sovereign for cheap amongst a load of other motors in the for sale as a going concern bit - mostly run of the mill stuff though. - I'll be back in a few days for some ther bits Im after so I'll get a good prod round then.

I've worked on one of the 1.7 derv corsas. They are horrid, colossal vibration, oil changes are a swine thanks to the oil filter positioned underneath all the injection equipment. Having said that they plod on forever and there's nothing to fail electrically. You would do well to find one useable now, most were run into the ground.

Nissan Primera 2.2dci.

I sincerely hope you're not the chap who bought one from me last year? Just to make it clear it's faults were clearly written in the add and you only have your self to blame!

There's a white pre bubble and wanky grill rover diesel up the road from me, it's pretty clean looking and even the bare steels are showing no signs of rot. It's very not for sale though, I have asked more than once.

Many good suggestions in here folks, I had no doubt that you lot could be relied on.

I'm think I'm going to try and find a replacement for the Leon and see how that works out for now. In reality it will need to be a car of around the same size and I think she'd enjoy a turbo after the wizzy 16 valve experience. The previous and my girls first car was a NA derv mk3 Golf, it was great if a little rusty but variety being the spice of life we won't go there again.

Junkmans french americana is fabulous and as much as I like it it's a little overstated for my style.

One of these days the Cortina will be back in action sporting modernish turbo diesel power so we can travel in style, at speed, with no breakdowns and for cheap. This will take some time to bring to fruition so in the meantime I may have entered into negotiations with someone about something...
