If Saab can do it, why can't we?

If we made Maestros in Bulgaria would they have to pass EU safety stuff? Or could we get round that by importing 98% complete ones and gluing the badges to the bootlid on an industrial estate in Chester somewhere? Maestro vans would be a guaranteed* money spinner.

OK we have a business plan, we are going to make Imps for the small car market, Cavs for the fleet market and LDVs only in white. All will run on recycled chip fat so will be greener than a leprechauns pointy thing. Just need those guys on Next Wednesday or whatever it is called, the website where they mooch around derelict buildings, to come up with a suitable venue.

Oh... and on the subject of Saabs... they would probably have sold a lot more if the general public new it was spelt Saab, not Sabb, Try looking for parts for a Sabb marine engine on ebay and you will see what I mean.

From the comments section:

"Because of the supposed patriotism of UK car buyers. They think Britons prefer a car carrying an old British badge and assembled in the UK over the same car with a German badge and assembled in Germany."

That Rover 75 was a cracking motor...or how 'bout stamping out a few Jagu-urs without that bloody "Lights Out" 'leccy system?

In true* autoshite fashion, you could just tell 'em: "We got bladdered and threw darts at that map of factories you see there...that's why the factory is in sodding Bursselshine or woteva."

Warranty? Schmorranty...

Actually if the Chinese or someone could build Maestro vans MEGA cheap (like so you could buy one for £3500) they'd probably sell.

Do commercials have to pass Ncap?  Actually do cars need to pass it or will they just not sell if the marks are low?

When they tried importing Hindustan Ambassadors from India they ended up costing the best part of ten grand by the time they made them legal for the UK, and there has been a lot of inflation and new legislation since then.

Yes. manufacture in some eastern bloc backwater with cheap labour. if you keep production figures low enough there are all sorts of legal loopholes regarding ncap/type approval etc.

Definite +1 on bringing back LDV. the sherpa would not have lasted so long if there was not a ready market for it. small cheap vans will always sell, much like the commer FC/Bedford HA

I've always thought that knocking up new Mk2 "heritage" Escort shell on an industrial estate in Halewood might be a decent moneyspinner.
