Moto Chod - Back from the dead

So, last Thursday I went for a over the bars and down the road excursion after the classic 'sorry mate, didn't see you' right turn driving antics of a otherwise nice chap in a modern french hatchback. The chap was turning right across on coming traffic (me, literally) and I managed to get a swerve on so ended up whacking the right side of my bike and body all up and down the front of his car before exiting via the front window and doing some gymnastic shizzle down the road. My bike meanwhile did it's own display of flippery and came to a crashing halt rather abruptly against another modern hatch which was poking it's nose out of the side road preventing me from taking more evasive evasive.

Turns out me and the Honda bounce well and though both of us are a bit busted up we should be savable. Initial inspection veered on the side of optimism and it was decided that panel damage aside a set of headers and new oil line should see it right.

It took the below snaps and sent them off to insurance for them to assess the damage.

There was a fair few more pics but you get the general idea. Insurance decide Cat C and have paid out what the bike is worth minus 7 % salvage costs so I can keep the bike.

Whilst resting up I viewed all the pics and looking at a side on shot decided it was a tad shorter than it once was!

I've since had chance to have a proper look and started pulling stuff apart and making good. It's all a bit of a slow process as I'm still a bit of a raspberry though it beats sitting around doing jack shit and the sooner it's back together the sooner I can ride again. Plus I've entered the annual boxing day enduro so need it usable for that too.

Forks were well bent as was the front spindle and whilst fitting the spare set I had in the garage I discovered the bottom yoke was bent to buggery as well. Where the battery had taken a beat down the air box was all smashed and holey too so armed with a list of bits I went cyber searching for parts.

Individual bits start mounting up quickly so what I've done is purchased this for a bargain sum and trip to the sea side.

It's a sorry state (even compared to mine) though does contain most of the bits to remake the black one plus plenty of spares to boot.

Today has been fruitful, I've been hard at it and it's coming together nicely. Since this picture was taken the front end is all back together and straight though finger on the fork leg and a spin of the wheel has revealed the disc is bent too so that needs swapping over.

I had to dismantle the whole back end to remove the air box before putting it all to bed for the night. The red bike's air box is scrap too so mine will get some fiber glass bodgery which has worked a treat on the side panel which had a piece missing :-P

A mix of shoe laces (all out of zip ties) and lock wire has been used for panel repairs. Lock wire is good but anything that is liable to flex it ends up just cutting through which the shoe laces won't. Farmers twine is also making an appearance because as any fool knows it is great for all manor of structural repairs.

My right knee/leg/foot has all swelled up a bit after today so we'll see how it goes tomorrow. A good days work should see it all back together though this may well take a few days at current work rate plus it's a good chance to do all those bits that otherwise wouldn't get done.

Best give my insurers a shout to see where I stand with them what with it being a Cat C, I guess that a few hoops may need jumping through...

Ta, Tramadols and old no.7 are kicking in now so all good.

Headers and oil feed also fitted today so air box fab and carb clean whilst I'm there are all it really needs now. Oh, and the disc swapping and panels chucking back on! Double bugger, tyres need swapping too! Probably numerous other shite will rear it's ugly head in the cold light of day, just like it does like.

Bloody hell, that took a pasting. I'm guessing you were less bruised than the bike, since the accident pics appear to have been taken from a vertical position rather than a stretcher.

Glad to see you're cracking on with the rebuild already.

Thought that might 'go down well' here.

Yeah, got up fairly quick as it don't pay to be 20 feet away from your bike with the keys in the ignition around these parts. With the benefit of hindsight staying put will get you medical help a bit quicker, might not still have my bike though so it's a tough call.

This is exactly why I don't ride a motorbike, have a modern french hatch, or turn right.

Glad youre not broke fella.

Shit fella glad your alright, she looks a right old mess, looks as of she gave as good as she got though, lol at the cock

This is why bikes scare seven shades out of me.  Well done for bouncing back, and even more so for saving the bike from the horrors of insurance-sponsored scrapping.  I hope the plonker that pulled out is going to get a pasting in the courts!

cat c or d bikes dont need any form of vic check to go on the road -  cat a and b same as cars utterly fcuked or parts only

only applies to cat c cars - cat d dont need one either as it wont be structural

nice one about the bounce i had the same thing happen to me 13 years ago he turned right on me thru a line of standing traffic i headbutted the back of him and woke up three days later

took the twat for 6 grand and bought another bike :D - the bike i fell off needed new forks apparently and is still going

Ouch. I don't like that.

Being a biker, and fellow tarmac gymnastics performer, bike/car interface aftermath photos are the only thing on Earth that really make me cringe.

Glad to hear you're not badly damaged.

Like everyone else:

1) sorry it happened

2) very glad you're ok

3) hope full recovery happens soon

4) LOL at the cock and balls

All back together with some improvements* and taken out for a little ride today to see how we got. Weather was cold and clear with some bright sunshine, the kind of weather which makes an engine run well. Lot's of debris on the roads which were damp in many places and I found standing more comfy so headed into North Kent to take in a few green lanes. Nice and muddy which makes the lanes more of a challenge, saw a Kestrel take a large rodent from the hedgerow as I rode past which was nice.

Coxixs? Coxicks? Cocksticks? Tailbone hurts when sitting anywhere and I was wrong in thinking the lack of back rest on a bike would be of any benefit to comfort, standing is good and legs and arms seem up to the job if a little on the weak side. My riding was very on the defensive today and I really was expecting every fucker to try and pull out on me, you never can tell what another motorist is really thinking!

The Honda works as per it always did, well, apart from the front brake which is more shite than it was before. I'll hold fire on spending any money and see if it improves when my old pads bed into this rusty disk from the red spares bike though a braided hose new disk and decent pads may be on the horizon.

Above pic was on the way back home, got to the end of the lane and noticed the tip of my gear change had fallen off. Good job I got that spares bike hey.

It's good to hear you're back on the road and taking it easy!

If you see that the rust on the front disk has turned into a sort of brown glaze now you've used it, whip it off and give each side a few minutes punishment with a flapper wheel in the drill. Good as new!

Heroic recovery, the sort of tale that  puts me off  returning to 2 wheels after a very similar conflab many moons ago.   True shite-fight spirit in getting the Honda back on the road....

In the interests of vanity/hiding the rust from the MOT man I sprayed the non braking surface part of the disc. This may have been a mistake for many reasons;

1. The only color I had was rubbish 2. It will no doubt flake off and look even worse than it does now. 3. Of course I didn't mask it off so sprayed all over the braking surface too!

Sure, it will wear off in time though untill it does the brakes are rubbish and to top it all off I have a wobble at the lever. This could be paint on the disk or indeed another bent disk or... dare I say it, a bent hub lug where the disk mounts!

Pads need to bed in more before I do any thing drastic, it may then get some flappy sanding actionz.

Nice work fella.

Ta, it's good to have it back.

Sorry dude, maybe the crash pics are in poor taste. I've always hated hearing stories of motorcycle accidents that everybody seems to want to recount when they see you holding a bash hat but hey, shit happens. Get back on the horse that bit you if you feel the need, life's too short not to have fun and I get all grumpy without the freedom of riding a bike.

Today after a fair old fight I've managed to wrestle this old conti off a scrap rim from the spares bike. It's well past it's best but is also the best 17 inch tire I have. Think I'll use the machine at work on Monday as even ye old trusty rusty tire iron was flexing like a green stick getting this bugger off.
