Mr Livered Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Please help me. My mate says I'm a bellend because I said that my car has patina - pronounced "PAT inner". Apparently any fule kno that it should properly be pronounced "pat EENER". It may seem like a small thing, but after a couple of beers these things really* matter* so if any shiters can assist with the debate one way or the other I would greatly appreciate it.
MrDuke Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 OED says you're right. Although several older/non-trendy people also pronounce it with stress on the 2nd syllable, so it's probably in the process of evolving naturally, as words do.
vulgalour Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Be more pretentious and tell him your car is an embodiment of the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, its metal and paint bending to the natural erosion of the elements. Then kick him in the balls for saying patEEna. Jim Bergerac, Wilko220, KruJoe and 2 others 5
NorfolkNWeigh Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Presumably your mate also thinks that Ford made a Cort- inner. I don't know how to pronounce it , but when something is patinated, made up word for shagged, it makes more sense his way. Edited tax I didn't pay attention who thought what in original post, now I've confused myself.
dugong Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 I use both.I'll drive my car into the next ditch I find.

Shep Shepherd Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 The term 'ten-yard car' works better for me. Both of the Volvos are such cars
Mr Lobster Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I go to the pub to drink beer. The day I start sitting in the pub discussing pronunciations is probably the day I need to stop going.
drum Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 After days of inner turmoil I may have the answer to this vexing question. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Patina If you click on the USA flag you'll hear the American pronunciation while the UK flag gives the British version. You also have the opportunity to bring out the school boy in you and have your computer say swear words in a posh female accent. Then proceed to the lavvy and draw a cock on the wall.
