The BMW touring was awful - also had random tools scattered around the boot like a pry bar and some spanners, and the dashboard was showing ABS, Traction Control, something that looked like cruise control and engine management.

What is Cannock car auction actually like for actually properly buying a car? 

 

Generally full of crap, or is the stuff passing through generally pretty decent? Do they state where the stock has come from on each car, i.e. from private individuals or garages?

 

The other half is nagging me to replace the Scenic and Astra with something "decent" as a run-around. Something decent being ~10 years old, that's petrol, not falling apart and modern looking. Thinking something fairly mundane like Megane II, Astra H Mk5, Mazda 3, etc ...

 

Debating if its worth the 1 1/2 hr journey to travel up this Saturday to experience it and checking it out (before going again another time to buy). I know auctions can bite hard both for the season veterans and especially novices, but then it is sizably cheaper - giving plenty of cash left in the kitty to potentially fix any inevitable problems. I've been to a couple of British Car Auctions before, but after fees/etc, it seemed like it was setup to keep the riff-raff out and focus on the trade buyers.

It's a bit of a mixed bag here at Cannock, you get some seriously decent stuff but much of that is diluted with the utter rotters that go over the block.

 

When you're here at the auction shed, you'll get an honest look at the stock and get a better idea of what's available, what is utter shit and what is worth a serious punt. I think at the very least, most of the MIDLANDz MASSIV have been tempted at least once to kick a bid in.

 

Usually, we get to view the cars just before auction starts, but that only means looking at it from the outside and reading whatever bumph the seller has left in the window (usually an open service book, current MOT/car related bumph and maybe even a cheeky little note from the seller about how well looked after it was etc... there is no starting/driving/looking at engines, most cars are locked aswell.

 

Cars at Cannock tend to be a mixed bag of desperate dealers trying to get shot of unwanted stock and sometimes private sellers wanting a quick sale. As said before, what might be a cheap unwanted car to a dealer could be a tidy little run around for you and me.

So I guess for regular, modern chod probably means that most of it is probably fucked? Or possible place to buy stuff that won't sell this time of year - i.e. convertibles/cabriolets ... or maybe french stuff that dealers run from .

 

Which is the better of the two days (for prices + lack of crowds), Tuesday evenings or Saturday mornings?

Tuesday is cheaper, but I suspect that a higher proportion of mobile scrap is passing through the shed.

 

Best bargains on a Saturday are the first and last 10 cars. The main dealers either aren't in the shed or have bought their stock.

These cars are often the oldest on offer as well, hence lower dealer interest as the plate is more important than the condition to them.

 

A catalog cost £2 and is a few pieces of A4 stapled together, very useful for finding the right, size, age, mileage, etc and has the MOT date, whether clocked, mileage, CAT C/D and basic info.

 

I'll scan one in at work with all my price markings on and post it up here.

Auction your car and then try buying a replacement for the same/less. Points are deducted for a FTP in the first 1k miles. Points gained for profit when sold next time.
