Lets talk about the Renault 19

I've noticed these have got very rare of late, and I'd rather like one.

I think early ones are certainly getting into Renault 11 territory in terms of shite-appeal and rarity value.

The 16v version was one of the cars to have for a short while. Anyone remember them?

Pisstons heads had a nice piece about one a while back.

They came hatch and notchback flavor

Both are most sexy.

Phase one phase two cars for comparisons sake:

I know they're sort of a bit bland and a 'nothing' car, and I don't know why but I find them really appealing. I'm starting to think my dream* garage would go XM, 19, Jag.

Anyone here ever owned one (and lived to regret it)?

Always liked the 16V version but the bucket seats were not accomodating for my Fat Arse so I went for the 21 Turbo instead. Your right though they must be getting very thin on the ground these days in all variants.

Nowt wrong with your 21. There's a red phase one that's local to me, which I see a lot, but other than that, I never see 'em.

The phase 2 was hardly different on the front end to the megane. I never noticed before.

You're right.

I love it when car makers try to force their corporate nose onto something that really shouldn't use it. Extra obscurity points.

I drive past a white phase 2 on a daily basis, i'll have to get a pic as two doors up there's a tidy D-reg starlet aswell

Not that rare really, plenty of phase 1s still doing the rounds i'm picking a rather special one up next month,

I must admit that the convertable was an unhappy looking device but I did have great fun watching the BTCC 19s at Donnington back in '93.

I'm all ears :) Special, how?

Quite liked the old 19s, a mate had a very shite 16v for a while and the rattle from all the interior bits trying to become exterior bits was something to behold. Went like fook though.

Last Renault to be named with a number IIRC.

There's far more R19 content in the first-generation Megane than the Renault marketing department would admit to...

Of course, that's not a bad thing. It seems to me that 1990s French cars are far more reliable than their reputation would suggest, only let down by shite electrics in the plusher versions. Buy povo-spec and you'll be onto a winner !

YEH BUT V0LV0S R OLD MENS CARS LOL ONLY RETARDS DRIVE THEM LOL HAHA

We had a 1.9D Prima saloon for a few years and it was a great car. I thought I'd dropped a clanger at first because it needed quite a few bits but everything stayed fixed and nothing else went wrong with it. It was also surprisingly easy to work on and cheap for parts.

My old man got a new Renault 19 GTS-X Chamade in 1991 (J247 EAP). The seats were pretty lurid but the interior was pretty nice for the time, and felt really solid for a French car.

Hmm, just found a photo. The interior is not as nice as I remember and the seats not as garish. How times change.

One thing to note is that the pedals are offset slightly compared to a Hillman Imp. This means that if you have put an Imp in the garage and you are putting a Renault 19 on the drive behind, if you aim for the brake as if you are driving the Imp you are going to hit the accelerator and crash into the garage door trapping the Imp in there for a couple of weeks. Its worth thinking about this believe me.

IIRC the bonnet vent in the 16v Chamade was perfectly positioned to dump water down the sparkplug recesses. At least, that's what happened to a friend's (although he doesn't believe in servicing cars, so maybe that was the problem). I do also remember the incessant clattering from the dash and doorcards, although the turn of speed and handling made up for it.

My claim to possible fame was being one of the first people in the country to get ran over by a Renault 19, Back in March 1989 the owner of the Renault garage opposite mine was going out in a brand new grey R19 and shot across the road just as I was crossing it to go to primary school (I was 8).

He hit my leg smashing a few bones but apparently It caused a load of problems as I damaged the wing and they couldn't get hold of a replacement for a while I remember being told.

I've always had a soft spot for them since, especially for a nice met. blue R19 16v on around a J plate, lovely!

From my experience the front bonnet lip on the phase 2 could rot quite spectacularly.

Seats were comfier than the 9 / 11's often had a heavy clutch though

Yeah I was going to say about the heavy clutch but its been 15yrs since I have driven one and was not sure if I was imagining it.

There's a real beaten up 1991 Renault 19 RT I see a lot driving around the next village. Apparently the guy has owned it since new, it's beige AND a saloon. I must catch him some day and let him know I've somewhere for it to rot with a few of its own kind.

So it seems a baby Trigger is better made than a Renault 19 :-P

 (I was 8).

You were cool? You were 8? You were cool when you were 8? 8)

My favourite was the R19 Williams* on Deals on Wheels.

Why-aye man.

I have made myself want to watch Deals on Wheels now. I wonder if 4OD on YouTube has any other series to offer now...

The 19 was actually a really well sorted car and generally pretty reliable. Naturally, I want one. Preferably a 16v cabrio.

That'd do nicely. Perhaps next year...

I wanted a silver 1:43 phase one 19 but it sold out

Mr Lobster, there's a nice cabrio on C&C, just under 2k...I reckon you could get them down to well under that.

Trig, you didn't bang your head by any chance did you? Just wondering like..... :-P
