In the "freecycle" section of the local rag, someone's listed a '77 XJS V12 with good engine, bad bodywork. I want to get it and do the cliched coffee table thing, but has anybody a better suggestion for what to do with the engine?

What stone have they been hiding under for the past 8 months? Some gippo will have beaten you to it by now, either that or someone the bloke knows will have given him the minutes to the meeting he very obviously missed. You get this sort of thing happening on gumtree all the time.

Aye, it's incredibly frustrating. I've had not one but two instances of that in recent weeks, where a 'free' car has turned out to actually be 'unfree'. Now, I don't begrudge it necessarily, but when I have arranged the time with SWMBO, booked a trailer, filled the gas-guzzler up with jungle juice for the recovery etc... it's right pain in the ass when the 'giver' decides that it's actually worth £350. And you and I know that it probably isn't, that it'll be totally kenked and rotten, and some bloke in the pub has said 'nah you'll get £300 scrap for it... "Had this with a Scimitar last week, bloke wanted shot ASAP, we said we would take it no problem, be there at the weekend.... then he decides that it's actually worth loads because of all the spares with it and the 'scrap value' (What is the weighbridge price for GRP?).

I have only had one "Free" car ever. It was an ultra rare R21 Turbo Quadra (4 x 4) that had been stood for a couple of years with a turbo problem. It was that good when I got there that my conscience got the better of me and I had to gave the guy £50 for a night out.Put the actuator back on and some new discs and pads, passed the MOT first time!Good luck with the Jag, here's hoping..............

Cool - what happened to it?

I've had probably about half a dozen freebies over the years - the best, objectively speaking, was probably an AX 10E with two months' rent that I ran as a daily until the tax ran out, but my fave was a Rover 216 Vanden Plas auto in Champagne with beige leather 8) . Worst was a navy blue Maestro 1.3L with a shagged engine mount.

cliched coffee table thing...

Heheh, I feel partly responsible for that  The Jag v12 bare block isn't very pretty anyway.
