This shape Scénic with the 1.9 dTi lump, NOT the dCi. Pretty much nothing to go wrong with them and still massively respected within the trade as a result - late ones regularly make significantly more monies than early Scénic IIs at auction. Extra points for finding a Monaco with full grey leather and a dash swathed in plastic wood!

This could be my specialist subject, my 7 seat history and verdict;

85'Audi 100 cc avant - best of the factory rear facers.

86 VdP Efi Montego- fast but crap

87 Renault Savanna- best non mpv 7 seater

82 505 Family pez auto- thirsty and unreliable ( I know, but mine was)

85 W123 230te - too bouncy and car sick inducing

87 W124 300Te - not as bouncy but not much quicker either

84 Volvo 740 GLE- roof too low,cramped

84/88/00/06 Espaces/Grande Espaces- all great all shit money pits

01 Grand Voyager 2.5 d proper gangsta- brilliant on fuel

99/01 Ulysses super practical, Hdi faster and more economical

05 Galaxy 1.9tdi most car like mpv- brilliant fast cruiser

01 Alhambra 1.9tdi only a 115 so slower and thirstier than the Galaxy

89/92/95 Discoveries kids love them, never felt happy with them in side facers

01 TD5 Disco better seven seater much worse Land Rover

So, if you can't find a Renault 21 get a mk1 Ulysee/806/Synergie/Zeta.

To add my childhood survival anecdote HA Viva van with a cushion, then a variety of Land Rovers, my dad called the wheel boxes seats- never even had a cushion- character building.

I'm being drawn towards mk 1 galaxies.I recon a tidy one would be a lovely motor. Those eurovan fiat/Citroen/pug things look alright too, especially in HDi form. Even the wife keeps asking about people carriers, we often all go out together, inlaws, grandparents etc so as a minus point I think she's getting ideas about more weekend away with them.

I found wilkos sherpa for sale. Looks great although I'm not sure I could pay that much for any sherpa!

Cheap, dizzler, horrible colour, loads of seats, looks like the box it came in, and utterly shite.

Oh, and it seems to be broken.

Have I won this thread?

I'd much prefer a Sherpa, more personality! I'd forget what I was driving with that!

Ticks all the boxes in theory though.

At least that way, you'd feel like you were driving an MG.

I think we've narrowed the search down to the Fiat Multipla, as they are dirt cheap and seem to be OK to drive (from what iv'e heard) and very practical, plus have that quirky factor. I pointed a Sherpa van out the the Wife and she told me to FRO, so that's that idea sunk.

Looks like the Wife's Rover 25 will go to make way for the new PPL CARRIAR, so I can keep my Citroen!

Does anybody have any real life experience with these beasts? I know that they can suffer from shite trim syndrome but that's about it!

Mazda Bongo Friendee? Terrible name, but have heard good reports. Plus they are veg friendly. (Friendee?)

Nah, just don't like them!

Ever considered a Fiat Multipla? :-)

How about a Checker Aerobus, the original stretched people carrier

I have been fancying some extra seat age for a while for the girls friends and in laws etc. occasional use only. There is a very reasonably priced v70 near us that I may take a look at high miles but these things seem to love em!

Just get the Multipla. It makes most sense. I came very close to getting one, but realised that I don't really need a people carrier. I already have one really - Disco is a seven-seater. Just what I need for me, the wife and the cat.

I bought an 806 HDI about 10 years ago and we still have it.

It is now up to 230,000 and still drives really nicely.  I drove it to southern Spain and back this summer though it did need a new alternator whilst down there.

It's an eight seater so I can remove the centre row centre seat and make it walk through and it's still seven.

Good points:-

Comfortable

Quick enough

38mpg around London

Bomb proof mechanicals except flywheel

Sliding doors

They don't rust

A/C and cruise control on mine

Bad points:-

Doesn't handle as well as the Sharalaxy

Dual mass flywheels unreliable, can be replaced with a solid flywheel for £many.

Fragile rear door handles

centre seats only have a lapbelt

Undented ones are rare

The 8 valve HDIs are tougher than the 16 valve (the 8 valve will generally survive a broken cambelt)

The 1.9 XUD is a bit slow and uses more fuel

The 8 seater has a single bench across the back so it's all or nothing but typically we have it folded up (so massive boot) and only fold it down for longer journeys and/or grandparents.

There was also a 406 estate with seats in the boot I think but you'll struggle to find one.

Gorgeous, but not a diesel!

Another non-dizzla:

Instant classic car policy eligibility (have you guys noticed, that to insure one of those god awful people carriers costs as much as a mortgage?) will free up ££££s that can be spent on petrol, plus

Country: France

will make for a collection thread full of roffel.
