After not having micra a week its gone up for swaps. Due to my medical condition I can't get comfy, seats seem hard and narrow and the dog wont get in the boot. Been offered a r plate merc 2.0 auto 4 pot. 150k on clock and 2 owners from new. Can I have some advice from anyone knowledgable as to what to look out for and what mpg to expect or even if its a had idea all together. Thanks in advance

A 1998 Mercedes? Just check at least some of the bodywork is still there and that the road springs will make it to the end of the seller's drive. Then have an exporter on standby for the inevitable.

I'm predicting either WATANABE RAGE LEVEL 5 UNLOCK when you get this car or CAVETTE/DOLLWOBBLER FICKLE LEVEL 9.7 and it'll be up for swap or sale 2 hours after you have bought it because you don't like the angle of the fuel gauge to the o/s/r door check strap.

I can't drive anymore at the moment. It's the wife. I feel like giving in myself because everything turned to Shit. Just asking for opinions so guessing you are saying watch for corrosion

Gearboxes have a tendancy to go awol. Rampant corrosion. alarm/immobiliser problems. In fact, a whole world of pain if you but a bad 'un. If the front wings are in one piece, and the 'box shifts ok, and it's very cheap, worth a punt.

Buying any Merc for "comfy seats" is going to lead to rectal disappointment, by the way!

I would have thought been comfort than a micra and more legroom! We have been offered two other vehicles I have just found out from the wife we have been offered two other cars too. I just want a bloody car that I can get in easily and have a bit of legroom.

Yep, because no W124 has ever rusted or broken down and every W210 exploded in a shower of brown flakes as soon as it was three years old, that's why none of them make it to, oh...say 15 years old..... ;)

They're quite easy cars to appraise since after this length of time they tend to be either quite decent or total sheds, and if it looks OK and drives OK then it probably is OK.

They're mechanically quite tough although I can imagine the 2 litre has a hard time shifting the heavy carcass about the place, but if you're lucky it'll have shed a couple of hundred kilos due to OMGRUST.

The electrics can be iffy so play with everything, and they can suffer the usual big Kraut barge steering & suspension wobbles. Make sure you get it up to a decent speed on the test drive and try the brakes.

It all depends on the price, if it's £500 then you'd expect a bit of scabbiness. Some of them can be right horrors but if it's lasted this long.....

Got 150k on clock some history and three owners. He said the only rust on it is one front wing got slight bubbling and the back drivers window don't work. 7 seated too. Unsure on economy side of things. He offered straight swap for micra cos he split up with Mrs an don't want family car

My W124 with the same engine was pretty good on fuel, maybe 40 MPG on a run and late twenties around the doors.

That don't sound too bad. I could stomach that. Wife not interested yet though. She said we need bigger car and now says looks too big! Bloody women!

I haven't had my W124 estate for long enough to measure mpg accurately but I reckon it's going to work out at high 20s or so. The 2 litre engine is a bit gutless for such a big car, the gearbox has a choice of "E" or "S" modes, but I've found that if you choose "E" it's quicker to walk. For some reason mine doesn't seem to kick down in "E", so to accelerate quickly enough to overtake, join a motorway, etc, you end up wrestling with the shift knob to lock it in a lower gear.

Fortunately there's something about the car that encourages you to take your time and waft serenely along, I've got into the habit of bunging the cruise control on at about 65 mph, which would be unthinkable on (say) my Saab, which makes me want to keep accelerating.

Mine has some electrics that don't work, such as radio cassette and rear wiper, but everything important works fine and there's no significant rot. Overall I'm liking the car, so far it's looking like a keeper.

I think this gearbox has a w ands on it. Winter and sport mode. It's the 5g box I think. The five speed jobby.

I'd take that 'my missus has left me' spiel with a pinch of salt, me old tater. That, along with the more modern 'I bought it for my wife but she doesn't like it' is (usually) basically just a pile of bollocks.

Look at every car vendor as though he's the kind of bastard who'd rip you off as soon as look at you, and has probably already removed the cat and replaced with a baked bean tin full of cornflakes, then you on the right track.

I believe him as he is a friend of mine cav. I know what you saying though. Heard them all before. Split up with his lass 2 month or so ago.

Went to look at merc last night. No rust bar a bubble above numberplate. Scuffle on front bumper and a few scratches but that's it. Loads of history. Drives smooth and very comfortable. Few little faults being rear drivers door window don't work and electric seat don't slide forward if back. Electric steering wheel adjust, electric headrest, backrest and height still work so doubt its a fuse or switch. Collecting it tomorrow morning

Well its home. After 9 hours outside sorting electric seat and giving it a Damn good clean..... It still looks filthy inside. Joys of buying a car that was used for ferrying kids and as a works van! Feels really comfy and smooth though, pulls well for a 2.0 auto tank!
