Hi all,

I have the family Astra estate to move on. It's been owned by the wife for about 3 years and has been a great car and has taken us everywhere. I'll be sad to see it go but it's time for a change.

127,000 miles

1.6 8v manual, runs smashing.

Bodywork has a few dints, but nothing drastic

Good tyres and exhaust

Very reliable and good on fuel.

Rear arches are mint, There's no rust anywhere on it.

CD player with steering wheel controls.

I think the EGR valve is playing up as it occasionally jumps when pulling away. I blanked it off with a bit of coke can a couple of years ago, I suspect it needs blanking again.

18 months or so I did the head gasket, doddle of a job.

Mot'ed until February 20th 2014, Taxed until the end of the month.

£350, collection from Stoke on Trent.

I spent four years and 40k miles tooling around in an identical one for work, albeit with the 1.7TD lump.  I'd recommend them instantly, nice to drive, well screwed together and excellent tat-carrying potential, plus this one appears to have decadent velour and a grey dash to brighten up the interior - much better than the rather depressing black & green cloth, black dash scheme ours had.  This is a complete bargain, GLWTS etc.

I think all mk4 Astras came in this colour from 1998 - 2000, by law.

Nearly all. My (dearly loved and much missed) 1.6 Sport was black.

Up my street? Mentally it's parked outside my bedroom window. Sadly it's not to be as I have too many motors now and need to put the 406 through a test so I can sell that to tax two other bloody cars this month :(

I'm up for a deal of some sort.

This has gotta go soon, please save me from EGAY!

I'd love to do a deal, Tim, but I need money to tax two other cars :(

Right car, wrong time.  I've looked at this all ways around and I can't get the funds together to scoop it up as a sensible Golf replacement and put tax on it and get it back the 100+ miles to Derbyshire.  It's quite frustrating really.  So this is a GLWTS post and commiserations for having to consider eBay.

It's not 100 miles, surely? I can do a shiter discount if it helps? Just man up and buy it man!

Actually, for some reason I misread 'Stoke-on-trent' as 'Stockton-on-Tees' so no, you're only 50-70 miles away depending on the route I take.  Right this minute I can only rummage up £100 and that's just plain insulting to you.  In a few weeks I can rummage up more, a couple of months and I can get the whole asking price and tax... so like I say, right car but the wrong time.

Posted

How about if you get it and pay me the balance when you it? I'm trusting like that see!

Posted

What, like some sort of Shiters Finance Scheme?  Because I could be down for that.

Posted

Note to self:  check everything.  I erroneously thought this was the lower tax bracket, which it isn't, so I can't afford to put the tax on it to get it home and I can't pick it up today as I won't be back until late this evening.

You'd be ok tomorrow I reckon. One day over isn't likely to bother them too much, especially as you'll have all your paperwork on you and will be taxing it on Monday as you've been working away.

Posted

No worries......nevermind, although personallyI think driving it one day out of tax isn't much of an issue, but driving it for a month with no tax, sorning it on the last day of the month and then taxing it thereby missing a month out is a nono.

When I get back tonight I'll see if I can arrange anything more concrete for this one.  I really do think it's not the most sensible thing for me to pursue even though it looks like a practical chariot... but when did I ever let common sense stop me doing anything?

GR8 for house moves Angyl!

Tim, if he gives you any bother, I know where he lives :D

Oh crap, the Autoshite Massif are on to me!

In all seriousness though, I can't make this happen.  The Princess has earned some tlc from me after performing so well this past week and a half and I really shouldn't put off some of the more important jobs.  The spark leads, for instance, are showing signs of failing now, and the undersealing needs doing before winter, and the door bottoms could do with repairs, and I need to find out exactly where that oil is coming from and stop it... you know, important stuff like that.

Having said that, in the unlikely event the Astra is still around when I have cash and I've pampered the Princess a bit I'll definitely give you a call.  Sorry.

No worries! I'm sure someone will have it, it's a decent motor.
